This book is a long-awaited contribution to the literature on Edvard Munch and his activities as a printmaker. It is a valuable reference work for print experts and Munch enthusiasts alike. Munch's graphic works have fascinated people all over the world for more than a hundred years. He himself arranged a number of exhibitions of his prints, and was represented in many print rooms and important private collections in Europe before World War II. When he died in 1944, Munch bequeathed his vast collection of some 18,000 prints to the City of Oslo. In 1963, the Munch-museet opened its doors to the public, and since the bequest has shown Munch's prints in numerous exhibitions. The author's extensive research and the enormous attention to detail in the individual entries should make this the standard reference work for many years to come.

Edvard Munch's (1863-1944) letters, notes, journals, and a number of other documents have always been a key wellspring for the appreciation of his exceptional art. Munch's literary journals and notes on art have qualities that make them artistic expressions in their own right. Oslo's Munch Museum recently launched a digital archive of the artist's collected writings at www.eMunch.no. To accompany the launch and the museum's exhibition, the comprehensive book eMunch.no - Text and Image has been published. The book contains thought-provoking essays by fifteen scholars.

The Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Mass., which opened in 1955, was founded by an heir to the Singer sewing machine fortune, Robert Sterling Clark (1877-1956), who began collecting art in Paris in 1911. He had a strong interest in 19th-century painters, particularly the French impressionists and Americans Winslow Homer and John Singer Sargent, but the museum also has old-master paintings, prints, drawings, decorative arts, sculpture and illustrated books. Eighty-four of these are reproduced in fine color in this elegant volume. Included are such disparate works as Virgin and Child Enthroned with Four Angels by Piero della Francesca; the once immensely popular Nymphs and Satyr by Bouguereau; paintings by Monet, Renoir and other impressionists; decorative urns, cups and baskets in silver and porcelain; and a sheet of pen-and-ink animal studies by Albrecht Durer. The accompanying essays, by 10 current and former staff members, are insightful and readable. This is a splendid introduction to a small, delightful collection. 88 colour & 5 b/w illustrations

His symbolic use of flowers and of motifs drawn from Japanese and Oriental art in these 'subjectless' pictures mark him out as a founder of the Aesthetic Movement in Britain and a precursor of European Symbolism.".

Love, pain, and death; passion, loneliness, and sorrow - the entire oeuvre of Edvard Munch (1863-1944) revolves around the fundamental experiences of human existence. Munch is regarded as one of the trailblazers of the Expressionist currents that informed European painting in the early twentieth century. His prints were not byproducts but a central element of his oeuvre, from the first etchings in 1894 to the lithographs he made just before his death. Among the masterpieces included in this representative volume of images and texts are graphic versions of Munch's world-famous subjects in the form of large-format color lithographs, etchings, woodcuts, hand-colored prints, or experimental prints on colored paper. Munch's graphic works, in which he achieved a persuasive condensation of his major Symbolist allegories, captivate the viewer with their subtle color palettes and their expressive sense of reduction. Exhibition: Kunsthaus Zu rich, Switzerland (4.10.2013-12.1.2014).
