Can the electric and magnetic fields (EMF) to which people are routinely exposed cause health effects? This volume assesses the data and draws conclusions about the consequences of human exposure to EMF. The committee examines what is known about three kinds of health effects associated with EMF: cancer, primarily childhood leukemia; reproduction and development; and neurobiological effects. This book provides a detailed discussion of hazard identification, dose-response assessment, exposure assessment, and risk characterization for each. Possible Health Effects of Exposure to Residential Electric and Magnetic Fields also discusses the tools available to measure exposure, common types of exposures, and what is known about the effects of exposure. The committee looks at correlations between EMF exposure and carcinogenesis, mutagenesis, neurobehavioral effects, reproductive and developmental effects, effects on melatonin and other neurochemicals, and effects on bone healing and stimulated cell growth.

The U.S. Navy established an ecological monitoring program to determine whether electric and magnetic fields from extremely low frequency (ELF) communications systems influenced plant and animal populations near the transmitting facilities. Although some of the researchers believe that a few biological changes might have occurred, they concluded that the results do not indicate significant adverse ecological effects. This book evaluates the 11 ecological studies of the Navy's monitoring program and examines the adequacy of experimental design, the data collection and analysis, and the soundness of the conclusions. It also addresses whether the monitoring program was capable of detecting subtle effects due to ELF exposure and examines the biological changes observed by some program researchers, such as enhanced tree growth.

This book gives facts about the dangers, revealing that most of us are exposed to radiation and electromagnetic fields everyday. Electromagnetic fields and radiation are everywhere - near power lines, computers, radio and television signals, microwave ovens, toasters, alarm clocks and everyday electrical appliances. The media are warning of the possible hazards of EMFs and EMR and recent studies suggest that they cause leukaemia in children and breast and brain cancer in adults. It advises which levels to worry about, and how to minimize the risks. It is also a sourcebook for citizens seeking action from utility companies, employers, manufacturers and governmental agencies.

Learn easy, step-by-step solutions for managing EMF exposure and creating a healthy environment for you and your family! When it comes to managing our health, most of us think of regular exercise, healthy eating, limiting the toxins in our water and food supply. What we haven't been trained to consider is our exposure to invisible electromagnetic fields (EMFs) created by the myriad of electronic devices that surround us every day. There is a growing body of evidence that EMF fields create numerous downstream health effects. It was this discovery, along with her own personal EMF sensitivity and experience working with clients around the world, that led Risa Suzuki to write her book, What the EMF? How to Protect Your Home from EMF Exposure, Improve Sleep, Reduce Anxiety, and Live a Happier, Healthier Life! Risa uses her training and experience as a certified Building Biology Environmental Consultant to test and clear EMFs and toxins to create healthier homes and workspaces. In addition to sharing foundational knowledge of the different types of fields to consider, Risa provides you with an easy, step-by-step framework to guide you through all aspects of clearing EMFs in your home. Don't worry, you don't need to have extensive technical knowledge, Risa shares all of her secrets, practical tips and instructions for each room of the home, showing you how to best manage your EMF exposure―that only her private clients have been privy to until now! This behind-the-scenes view shows you how to avoid the mistakes and EMF "gotchas" most people make, and how to understand EMFs in a way that makes sense. No matter where you are on your EMF journey, this is the perfect resource to have―helping answer any questions that come up along the way. In this book you'll discover: What EMFs are, how they affect your health and the different types of fields found in your home and where they typically fall off. How to identify and avoid the most common mistakes made by DIYers. How to manage EMF exposure outside of the home. Methods for recognizing and managing the early stages of EMF symptoms and sensitivities. Nutritional and holistic practices that help combat the downstream effects of EMFs. Room-by-room checklists for managing EMF exposure and creating a safe space for you and your family. ...and much more! EMFs represent a legitimate concern in our technology-infused world. However, by making thoughtful and simple adjustments to our environment, such concerns can be mitigated. Join Risa as she takes the confusion and frustration out of navigating EMFs and walks you through the same simple and straightforward approach she uses with her clients. Ready to begin your journey? Appeals to a Wide Audience Fueled by more than 30 years of intensive research and debate on the impact of electromagnetic fields (EMF) on everyday life—starting with residential exposure to magnetic fields and the development of childhood cancer in the 70s and continuing with risk of exposure via wireless communications in present day—Epidemiology of Electromagnetic Fields addresses ongoing public and scientific controversy surrounding the possible effects of electromagnetic fields (EMF) to human health, and provides an in-depth introduction into the methodology of environmental epidemiology that is appropriate for all levels, from student to practicing engineer. Exposure to EMF Focusing primarily on EMF examples, the author presents the general principles and methodological concepts in environmental epidemiology. Topics of importance in the first part of the book include epidemiological study designs, exposure assessment methods and implications for the study results, as well as selection bias, confounding, and other biases including reverse causality and ecological fallacy. The second part of the book covers environmental epidemiological methods in detail and outlines key examples such as childhood leukemia and exposure to extremely low-frequency magnetic fields, as well as examples that look at brain tumors and mobile phone use. The book also offers a detailed discussion on the range of EMF sources and exposures. In addition, it highlights the sophisticated assessment methods required to address exposure situations, and provides a historical perspective. The third part of the book examines how EMF exposure from the use of wireless communication techniques and other challenges affect risk assessment today and also details future developments. Explores environmental epidemiological methods in detail, while critically discussing epidemiological findings Provides a state-of-the-art overview of the scientific evidence of the health effects of EMF Considers how novelty, the steep increase of radiofrequency (RF) EMF exposure from wireless communications, and other challenges affect risk assessment today Epidemiology of Electromagnetic Fields provides a thorough overview of the subject, and evaluates the scientific evidence surrounding the possible health effects of EMFs.

Keys, wallet, cell phone . . . ready to go! Cell phones have become ubiquitous fixtures of twenty-first-century life—suctioned to our ears and stuck in our pockets. Yet, we’ve all heard whispers that these essential little devices give you brain cancer. Many of us are left wondering, as Maureen Dowd recently asked in the New York Times, “Are cells the new cigarettes?” Overpowered brings readers, in accessible and fascinating prose, through the science, indicating biological effects resulting from low, non-thermal levels of non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation (levels considered safe by regulatory agencies), coming not only from cell phones, but many other devices we use in our homes and offices every day. Dr. Blank arms us with the information we need to lobby government and industry to keep ourselves and our families safe.
