"From 20-22 August 2018, Air University brought together leading subject matter experts from government, industry, laboratories, and academia to discuss vulnerabilities and threats, raise awareness, and explore mitigation strategies on an array of national security challenges in the EMS. More than 135 military and civilian personnel representing more than 40 United States Department of Defense organizations, NATO, academia, and the private sector attended the inaugural summit. During the summit, working groups focused on electromagnetic pulse (EMP), geomagnetic disturbance (GMD), lasers and optics, directed energy (DE), high-power microwaves (HPM), and EMS management. The summit was designed to challenge contemporary thinking, develop original thought about EMS, and encourage actions to recover the technological initiative. Another priority was to address immediately the widening EMS threats to the United States and its allies. This report provides a summary of insights, conclusions, and recommendations developed during the inaugural summit."--Provided by publisher.

This unique new resource presents applications of modern RF photonic systems that use RF photonic components for commonly used signal processing systems. This book provides insight into how a variety of systems work together, including RF down conversion, analog to digital conversion, RF oscillators, and frequency identification. A comparison of analog versus digital systems is presented. Readers find in-depth coverage of analog delay lines using RF photonics, various system architectures, and details about RF photonic component performance. Signal processing utilizing RF photonics and the need for down conversion is discussed. The many advancements in analog delay line performance are explained, including those in photodetector, optical fibers, and optical and amplifier modulators. The book highlights the advantages of using oscillators utilizing RF photonics and explores the elements of phase noise, timing jitter, and optoelectronic oscillators. The benefits of signal identification, isolation, and separation of RF photonics are identified. Professionals are brought up to speed on RF frequency identification using optical injection locking. The book provides discussions on the fundamentals and advancements in integrated RF photonics and explains how to design an RF photonic downconverter. It covers additional applications of integrated photonic circuits and gives an explanation of why to use different modulation formats for different applications.

"This monograph addresses how military design thinkers can maximize the utility of the design methodologies they select for employment when designing military operations. Presently, Western militaries apply a mix of two distinct types of design thinking, each with a different origin and employing different paradigms, yet most military practitioners remain unaware of this situation. The result is confusion, obfuscation through inappropriate conceptual overlap, and sub-optimal outcomes when overlapping types of design are simultaneously applied to identify and solve operational problems. These two types of design thinking come from different arenas: one has a background in various “civilian” disciplines, and in commerce and industry; the other originates within militaries themselves. This monograph attempts to untangle these two types of design thinking from each other through the provision of a detailed historical account, followed by a paradigmatic analysis of each. It then addresses the two types together, examining how a deliberately cultivated awareness of both can lead to enhanced design thinking outcomes, and exploring how military design thinking might evolve in the near future."--Provided by publisher.

This book, Space Capstone Publication Spacepower: Doctrine for Space Forces, is capstone doctrine for the United States Space Force and represents our Service's first articulation of an independent theory of spacepower. This publication answers why spacepower is vital for our Nation, how military spacepower is employed, who military space forces are, and what military space forces value. In short, this capstone document is the foundation of our professional body of knowledge as we forge an independent military Service committed to space operations. Like all doctrine, the SCP remains subject to the policies and strategies that govern its employment. Military spacepower has deterrent and coercive capacities - it provides independent options for National and Joint leadership but achieves its greatest potential when integrated with other forms of military power. As we grow spacepower theory and doctrine, we must do so in a way that fosters greater integration with the Air Force, Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard. It is only by achieving true integration and interdependence that we can hope to unlock spacepower's full potential.
