Para El paisaje de la arquitectura la autora ha superado notablemente la contradicción entre una exposición necesariamente lógico-lineal, que facilite la inteligibilidad del contenido, y la extensa complejidad de éste. Complejidad ineludible para una solvente descripción y análisis del conocimiento contemporáneo. Comprometerse con nuestro tiempo histórico conlleva asumir que el paradigma positivista-lógico ha sido envuelto, que no desplazado, por el paradigma de la complejidad. El principio de la causalidad, y la independencia de “causa-efecto” del observador, es cuestionado por el paradigma complejo, para el que en la gestión del conocimiento el propio observador está imputado como un dato o suceso en el propio proceso. La profesora García-Hípola nos conduce por su ensayo a escenarios teórico-críticos a través de su propia experiencia, incluso de su protagonismo en los procesos, reflexiones y cuestiones que analiza. Es desde esa complejidad desde la que reivindica implícitamente en su texto la transversalidad entre autor, espectador, docente y creador, literalmente en las citas referidas a experiencias sobre la obra de El Bosco, o en las que somete al arquitecto a nuevos roles que devienen del comportamiento de la materia como un auténtico ecólogo o los del propio antropólogo que explora la acción del ser humano y sus detritus en el paisaje, como en su proyecto para Villajoyosa, verdadero tratado de “arquitectura de campo”. In The Landscape of Architecture the author has remarkably surpassed the contradiction between a necessarily logical-linear explanation, to facilitate the intelligibility of the content, and its vast complexity. This is an inescapable complexity for a trustworthy description and analysis of contemporary knowledge. Commitment to our historical time involves assuming that the logical positivist paradigm has been wrapped, not displaced, by the paradigm of complexity. The principle of causality, and the independence between “cause and effect” of the observer, is questioned by the complex paradigm, for which, in the management of knowledge, the observer is ascribed as data or event of the process itself. In her essay professor García-Hípola leads us to theoretical-critical scenarios through her own experience, including her protagonism in the processes, reflections, and issues that she analyzes. From this complexity, the transversality between author, spectator, teacher and creator is claimed, literally in the quotes of the experiences about Hieronymus Bosch’s work, or in those where the architect is subjected to new roles that come from matter’s behavior, as a true ecologist, or those of the anthropologist who explores human action and its detritus in the landscape, as in her project for Villajoyosa, veritable treatise of “field architecture”.

This autobiographical novel on the life of the brilliant Belgian inventor Marcel Demeulenare and his wife Simonetta narrates the fabled story, set between the end of the 13th century and the beginning of the 14th, of the couple during their years in Spain, turned into happy misfits who travel as jugglers and animal tamers giving entertainment shows in cities throughout the peninsula. Through their delicious dialogues, the reader will be able to learn about and delve into the advanced philosophy of this great woman of the 20th century and the great ideas of the great Flemish engineer, inventor of important technical systems. The real life that Simonetta and Marcel led during their unexpected stay in the Spanish city of Cuenca throughout the 1970s was the inspiration for this novel. The original manuscript, unpublished until the publication of this edition, was donated by Simonetta as a sign of recognition and gratitude to the International Museum of Electrography -today MIDECIANT- of Cuenca, whose officials had invited her to its inauguration in 1990. This edition rescues the original manuscript, incorporates its translation into Spanish and includes the rest of the original documents donated by Simonetta. To which has been added the textual and visual documentation of some of the original documents related to the fascinating life and important inventions by Marcel Demeulenaere. This volume aims to present an updated portrait of the Roman countryside in Roman Spain by the comparison of different theoretical orientations and methodological strategies including the discussion of textual and iconographic sources and the analysis of the faunal remains. The archaeology of rural areas of the Roman world has traditionally been focused on the study of villae, both as an architectural model of Roman otium and as the central core of an economic system based on the extensive agricultural exploitation of latifundia. The assimilation of most rural settlements in provincial areas of the Roman Empire with the villa model implies the acceptance of specific ideas, such as the generalization of the slave mode of production, the rupture of the productive capacity of Late Iron Age communities, or the reduction in importance of free peasant labor in the Roman economy of most rural areas. However, in recent decades, as a consequence of the generalized extension of preventive or emergency archaeology and survey projects in most areas of the ancient territories of the Roman Empire, this traditional conception of the Roman countryside articulated around monumental villae is undergoing a thorough revision. New research projects are changing our current perception of the countryside of most parts of the Roman provincial world by assessing the importance of different types of rural settlements. In the last years, we have witnessed the publication of archaeological reports on the excavation of thousands of small rural sites, farms, farmsteads, enclosures, rural agglomerations of diverse nature, etc. One of the main consequences of all this research activity is a vigorous discussion of the paradigm of the slave mode of production as the basis of Roman rural economies in many provincial areas. A similar change in the paradigm is taking place, with some delay, in the archaeology of Roman Spain. After decades of preventive/emergency interventions there is a considerable quantity of unpublished data on this kind of rural settlements. However, unlike the cases of Roman Britain or Gallia Comata, no synthesis or national projects are undertaking the task of systematizing all these data. With the intention of addressing this current situation the present volume discusses the results and methodological strategies of different projects studying peasant settlements in several regions of Roman Spain.
