The publishing company has asked me why I wanted to write this book. It is really quite simple. One, I love little children! I love to watch them absorb new lessons and then think about them and apply them as they grow. Secondly, I absolutely love Christmas! I love what it stands for and all the happiness it generates. Theres an old saying that goes Life has a way of getting in the way. That is so true. I have wanted to write this book since I was about twenty. I am now sixty-six! First, you go to work, then you get married, and then children come along. Of course, we had our share of furry and feathered children. At last count, I have had sixteen dogs, three cats, and eight birds. Oh, yes, and then there was Wiggles, our rabbit. Did I mention that I also have two sons and two beautiful granddaughters? They are all of the human variety of course. But Eddie was always in the back of my mind. Its strange that he would usually pop up in the summer of all times! I think it was because we used to have a big garden and Mother Nature was always good to us. We would give our neighbors some of our bounty of tomatoes, peppers, and garlic. That, in a way, was like Christmas because it was like giving them presents. Instead of Eddie, we were the elves for Mother Nature, and she was Santa. There are so many marvelous things in the world, Christmas being one of my favorites. I hope that, when you read my book, you will learn a lot more about where the elves and Santa live. It really is a beautifully happy and busy place. Happy reading and imagining!

Based on the tradition Carol Aebersold began with her family in the 1970s, this cleverly rhymed children's book explains that Santa knows who is naughty and/or nice because he sends a scout elf to every home. During the holiday season, the elf watches children by day and reports to Santa each night. When children awake, the elf has returned from the North Pole and can be found hiding in a different location. This activity allows The Elf on the Shelf to become a delightful hide-and-seek game.

Apart from Christmas, though, nothing is more exciting to a scout elf than a birthday--and elves celebrate birthdays with a tradition that goes back thousands of years. Now, at the request of children from around the world, Santa has given his scout elves special permission to share that birthday tradition with the families they love. An elf cannot come to a celebration, though, unless it is invited.

This biography of legendary Hawaiian surfer Eddie Aikau is “a homespun homage to a modern-day folk hero” (Outside Magazine). In the 1970s, a decade before bumper stickers and T-shirts bearing the phrase Eddie Would Go began popping up all over the Hawaiian islands and throughout the surfing world, Eddie Aikau was proving what it meant to be a “waterman.” As a fearless and gifted surfer, he rode the biggest waves in the world; as the first and most famous Waimea Bay lifeguard on the North Shore, he saved hundreds of lives from its treacherous waters; and as a proud Hawaiian, he sacrificed his life to save the crew aboard the voyaging canoe Hokule’a. From Stuart Holmes Coleman, Eddie Would Go is the “fascinating” story of Eddie Aikau’s life and legacy, a pipeline into the exhilarating world of surfing, and an important chronicle of the Hawaiian Renaissance and the emergence of modern Hawaii (San Francisco Chronicle). “Enlightening . . . an impressive history.” —Surfing Magazine “A meaningful biography of a surfing hero . . . extraordinary.” —San Diego Union-Tribune “Coleman, a surfer himself, does an admirable job of de-mystifying this remarkable man.” —St. Petersburg Times
