Gathering of Imbeciles is an irreverent look at zookeeping through the eyes of Donald, a keeper at the fictitious Corona Park Zoo. The eighteen short stories that chronicle his adventures - chock-full of feces, urine, and pus - would likely not be picked up by Disney-Pixar for an uplifting, animal-related Summer release. Donald may well be the next comic anti-hero for disgruntled workers everywhere.

In these humorous and heartfelt essays, Patti See celebrates small-town life in Wisconsin’s Chippewa Valley. Featuring childhood memories of supper clubs, thrift sales, and cribbage games, as well as the midlife concerns that accompany having a son in the military, a parent with Alzheimer’s, and a private onsite septic system, See’s writing praises the quirky charm of her hometown and its people. Growing up in the 1970s and 1980s as the youngest of eight children, Patti never imagined she’d stay in Chippewa Falls as an adult. Now, living on rural Lake Hallie just five miles from her childhood home, she has a new appreciation for all that comes with country living, from ice fishing and eagle sightings to pontoon rides and tavern dice. These brief essays—many of which were originally published in the Sawdust Stories column of the Eau Claire Leader-Telegram—establish that, above all else, it’s friends, family, and other folks in our hometown who provide us with a sense of belonging.

The eight Maggio kids grew up sharing everything from their fear of wild dogs to the neighbors’ watermelon patch. Pieces of Eight takes readers into a world where sibling rivalry is a joke and watching each other’s backs is the norm. The anthology’s sixty-plus stories from their childhood (told with hardly any exaggeration) and e-mail exchanges from today (written with hardly any humor) recount poignant situations, instructive mischief, and rewarding moments. If you’ve always wondered what other families are really like or why some brothers and sisters stay close while others do not, Pieces of Eight: Still Best Friends After All These Years provides some clues along with an entertaining read and some guaranteed smiles.

Through its six-season run, television's Grimm used the extraordinary to illuminate the complexity of the ordinary. Drawing on the Brothers Grimm folklore, the series crafted an enchanted present to illuminate social and ethical challenges facing Western--in particular American--culture at the beginning of the 21st century. This collection of new essays explores Grimm's critique of identity and justice in the modern world contexts of race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, environmentalism, genre and heroism, with a focus on the show's disruptive adaptation of fairy tales and reinterpretation of the police procedural in a fantasy landscape.

Although practice theory has been a mainstay of social theory for nearly three decades, so far it has had very limited impact on media studies. This book draws on the work of practice theorists such as Wittgenstein, Foucault, Bourdieu, Barth and Schatzki and rethinks the study of media from the perspective of practice theory. Drawing on ethnographic case studies from places such as Zambia, India, Hong Kong, the United States, Britain, Norway and Denmark, the contributors address a number of important themes: media as practice; the interlinkage between media, culture and practice; the contextual study of media practices; and new practices of digital production. Collectively, these chapters make a strong case for the importance of theorising the relationship between media and practice and thereby adding practice theory as a new strand to the study of anthropology of media.
