In May, she was in awfully bad shape, and it was clear that her time was getting short. Nevertheless, when the end came, it took me by surprise. I had been sleeping next to her and waking up at every little noise. She went into the toilet to relieve herself and had a heart attack while on the commode. I heard her fall and called her, but there was no answer. Jumping up, I rushed to her. She had fallen against the tub, gashing her head, and was bleeding heavily. I couldnt get her to wake up or completely stop the bleeding and had to leave her to call the emergency squad. After rushing back to her, I managed to stop the bleeding and held her in my arms, trying to help as much as I could. The emergency team still didnt come, so I called again, rushed back, and held her some more. I reminded her she had said she wouldnt leave me and begged her to hang on. She told me she saw the most beautiful white light she had ever seen and had to go to it. I could not see it and was devastated to think that she was dying. Much more recently, as I have read the Bible and discussed it with my pastor, I have learned that this was the light of Jesus she could see, because she was seeing in the spirit. I find it very comforting to know that she was going to be with him. Just after she stopped breathing, they arrived at the door and resuscitated her. She was breathing as we got to the hospital. However, shortly after she arrived in the emergency room, the doctor came to tell me that she was dead.

Down Farm Road 308, an hour's drive south of Dallas, amidst sprawling fields of cotton lies a small community--Penelope, Texas (population 211). Here, where the only thriving businesses are the granary and the post office, unless you count the soft-drink machine in front of the fire station, two-time Edgar Award-winning writer Carlton Stowers discovered a special town that came together, not only to support their six-man highschool football team--the Penelope Wolverines--through thick and a lot of thin, but also, and more importantly, each other. Where Dreams Die Hard is a warm and revealing portrait of the American heartland--and of one small town's love affair with the team that unites it. "Through his unforgettable depiction of innocence, goodness, loyalty, and friendship...Carlton Stowers gives us a moving portrait of a community that, in the words of one of the Penelope faithful, is like 'stepping into a Norman Rockwell painting.'" (Billie Letts, author of Where the Heart Is) "High school football in Texas is both sport and religion, and Stowers brilliantly brings this to light in Where Dreams Die Hard." (Jim Dent, author of The Junction Boys)

This book is the story of three men who, as friends and opponents, fought the battles of the idealistic '60s. Allard Lowenstein, quintessential liberal and architect of the celebrated "Dump Johnson" campaign, Dennis Sweeney, one-time protege of Lowenstein's and heroic figure in the Mississippi civil rights struggle, and author Harris, also a Lowenstein protege as well as draft-resisting Stanford student body president, made up the distinctive strands of that long-ago time when dreams of a better world and the notion that one person could make a difference moved a generation to take matters into its own hands. On March 14, 1980, in the grip of a paranoid schizophrenic fantasy, Sweeney walked into Lowenstein's Manhattan law office and shot his former mentor to death. This murder prompted Harris to look back across the years, to trace the scars of the battles, to remember who they had all been and how it had come to such an end. - Back cover.
