In about the 11th century BC, the Shang Dynasty declined in national strength, and was destroyed by King Wu of Zhou and a capital was established in Haojing- west of what is now Xi'an, in Shanxi Province. This period is known as the Western Zhou Dynasty. Handicrafts were monopolised by the royal family and were characterised by more extensive distribution than the Shang Dynasty with more workshops and finer division of labour. Jade was only one of the many handicrafts and as something of value was very popular among royals and vassals. The pieces of importance were artefacts are: the Y3 Tomb of the Gongyu State in Baoji of Shaanxi, Guo State Tombs in Sanenxia, Luoyang, Henan Province and the Jing State tomb of Gong Yu State in Houma of Shanxi. From this period there are also bronze wares and ceramics. In this period bronze wares changed in type, shape and inscription, emblazonary and casting. Ceramics developed significantly and hand stamped hand-made pottery flourished. This book, the second in a ten-volume collection, brings to the English-speaking world a series of books from China which has been complied by an Expert Committee of the Chinese Society of Cultural Relics. There are 383 descriptions.

The New Catalog of Maya Hieroglyphs, Volume Two
Author: Gabrielle Vail
Publisher: University of Oklahoma Press
Total Pages: 322
Release: 2012-11-12

ISBN: 0806185929

This long-awaited resource complements its companion volume on Classic Period monumental inscriptions. Authors Martha J. Macri and Gabrielle Vail provide a comprehensive listing of graphemes found in the Dresden, Madrid, and Paris codices, 40 percent of which are unique to these painted manuscripts, and discuss current and past interpretations of these graphemes. The New Catalog uses an original coding system developed for the Maya Hieroglyphic Database Project. The new three-digit codes group the graphemes according to their visual, rather than functional, characteristics to allow readers to see distinctions between similar signs. Each entry contains the grapheme’s New Catalog code, an image, the corresponding Thompson number, proposed syllabic and logographic values, calendrical significance, and bibliographical citations. Appendices and an index of signs from both volumes contain images of all graphemes and variants ordered by code, allowing readers to search for graphemes by visual form or by their proposed logographic and phonetic values. Together the two volumes of the New Catalog represent the most significant updating of the sign lists for the Maya script proposed in half a century. They provide a cutting-edge reference tool critical to the research of Mesoamericanists in the fields of archaeology, art history, ethnohistory, and linguistics, and a valuable resource to scholars specializing in comparative studies of writing systems and related disciplines.

An inside view of China's quest to become a global wine power and Bordeaux's attempt to master the thirsty dragon it helped create The wine merchants of Bordeaux and the rising entrepreneurs of China would seem to have little in common—old world versus new, tradition versus disruption, loyalty versus efficiency. And yet these two communities have found their destinies intertwined in the conquest of new markets, as Suzanne Mustacich shows in this provocative account of how China is reshaping the French wine business and how Bordeaux is making its mark on China. Thirsty Dragon lays bare the untold story of how an influx of Chinese money rescued France's most venerable wine region from economic collapse, and how the result was a series of misunderstandings and crises that threatened the delicate infrastructure of Bordeaux's insular wine trade. The Bordelais and the Chinese do business according to different and often incompatible sets of rules, and Mustacich uncovers the competing agendas and little-known actors who are transforming the economics and culture of Bordeaux, even as its wines are finding new markets—and ever higher prices—in Shanghai, Beijing, and Hong Kong, with Hong Kong and London traders playing a pivotal role. At once a tale of business skullduggery and fierce cultural clashes, adventure, and ambition, Thirsty Dragon offers a behind-the-scenes look at the challenges facing the world's most famous and prestigious wines.

"Evagrius Ponticus (343-399 AD), an influential writer among the early Christian monks, spent sixteen years in the desert of Egypt, mostly at Kellia (the Cells). He was a disciple of the two Macarii - saints of Egypt and of Alexandria - under whose guidance he became a "philosopher," one who writes about the Christian life." "This study of Evagrius' writings on anger, and its causes, consequences and cures, offers useful spiritual insight with practical applications for the post-modern reader. Drawing from Evagrius' voluminous writings, the author examines the stirrings of the human heart, deftly diagnosing the souces of overblown and wayward anger." --Book Jacket.
