An experimental investigation was conducted to determine the effects of radiated aerodynamic-noise on boundary-layer transition in supersonic-hypersonic wind tunnels. It is conclusively shown that the aerodynamic noise (pressure fluctuations associated with sound waves), which radiate from the tunnel wall, turbulent boundary layer, will dominate the transition process on sharp flat places and sharp slender cones at zero incidence.

This book contains contributions by colleagues, former students and friends of Professor Eli Reshotko in celebration of his 60th birth day. Since Professor Reshotko's scientific and engineering contribu tions have been in the areas of hydrodynamic stability, transition to turbulence, and boundary layer flows, it is only appropriate that the articles in this volume be devoted to these and related topics. The first two sections focus on instabilities and transition in sub sonic and supersonic flows, respectively. The third section deals with developing turbulence, while the the final section treats related prob lems in engineering fluid mechanics. The diversity and scope of the articles contained herein exemplify the insight and expertise required in the study of transitional and turbulent flows today - traits which also exemplify Eli Reshotko's contributions to these fields. A few of the articles in this volume were presented at a sym posium in honor of Eli Reshotko's 60th birthday, held in Newport News, Virginia, on July 28, 1991. The symposium was sponsored by lCASE, and organized by M.Y. Hussaini (lCASE) and R. Hirsh (U.S. National Science Foundation). Of those who could not attend, many chose to honor Professor Reshotko by a contribution to the volume dedicated to him. We would like to use this opportunity to express our deep ap preciation to M.Y. The subject of laminar-turbulent transition is of considerable practical importance and has a wide range of engineering applications. For this reason, the International Union of Applied Mechanics decided to sponsor a third Symposium on "Laminar-Turbulent Transition", which would be organised by the ONERA Toulouse Research Center and held at "Ecole Nationale Superieure de l'Aeronautique et de l'Espace" in 1989. It was supposed that like the two previous IUTAM Symposia (Stuttgart 1979 and Novosibirsk 1984) the symposium would be devoted to experimental of laminar-turbulent transition In fluids, i.e. the and theoretical studies physical problem of transition and mathematical modelling in shear flows. The contributed papers were selected by the Scientific Committee from extended abstracts. The larger number of highly qualified papers submitted for presentation led us to include in the program poster sessions, which could be held during morning, lunch and afternoon breaks, and to take the decision that the symposium should last five days (from Monday 11 to Friday 15 September). An excursion on Wednesday offering a well deserved rest and the occasion of new personal exchanges between the participants seems to have been appreciated by all. The symposium consisted of 8 invited lectures and 62 contributed pa pers presented either on oral or poster sessions.
