In 1989, the ISO Standard 8613 "Office Document Architecture (ODA) and Interchange Format" was published. The Standard is intended for the interchange of documents in an Open Systems environment. ISO 8613 is technically identical to the CCITT Recommendations of the T.410 series called "Open Document Architecture (ODA) and Interchange Format" published in 1988. Almost all major companies in the office automation and telecommunication area are currently developing products based on this Standard. In this book, all important aspects of the presently publishedeight parts of the Standard are discussed. The book provides a comprehensiveand detailed introduction to the technical specifications of ISO 8613 and the concepts on which these specifications are based, including the extensions which were added to the ODA Standard in 1991. The book isprimarily addressed to readers who want to investigate the applicability of the Standard for their document interchange problems, plan to acquire products based on the Standard, or intend to develop document processingsystems conforming to the Standard.

The virtual campus: Trends for higher education and trainingwas the theme of the IFIP Working Conference on which this book is based. lt was a joint event of Working Groups 3.3 and 3.6, Research and distance Education respectively, of IFIP Technical Committee 3 for Education. International dissemination and promotion of cooperation are IFIP aims that we particularly wanted to address. This is why we opened the event to non WG members and have established a virtual forum on the WEB that has been widely visited. The programme for the 27 to 29 November 97 in Madrid included invited speakers from leading institutions in the field, reviewed and selected contributions from an open call for papers, on-site demonstrations of !arge European projects and discussion sessions involving distant and present participants. The event attracted experts from 23 countries. About a hundred persons were involved, from all over the world. The spread and accessibility of information and communication technologies are rapidly changing p!"actices in learning and research activities, both in professional and academic settings. The number, variety and scale of experiences reported in recent publications shows a growing international involvement concerning not only small groups of researchers but also institutions fully committed in that direction.

Information and Process Integration in Enterprises: Rethinking Documents is a bold attempt to address information and process integration issues as a single body of research and practice. This book has identified the concept of documents as a common thread linking the integration issues. Documents, after all, are representations of information, along with representations of the usage of the information contained therein. Rethinking the role of documents is therefore central to (re)engineering enterprises in the context of information and process integration. The chapters of this book are based on papers presented at the `International Working Conference on Information and Process Integration in Enterprises (IPIC '96)', held at MIT on November 14 and 15, 1996. The chapters cover a range of issues: from the future role of documents in enterprise integration, to emerging models of business processes and information use, to practical experiences in implementing new processes and technologies in real work environments. Information and Process Integration in Enterprises: Rethinking Documents is suitable as a secondary text for a graduate level course on information technology.
