This book examines whether workers are less willing to accept defined benefit pension plans (a type of implicit contract) from firms that have reduced either worker compensation or employment. Worker reluctance to accept defined benefit pension plans from these firms suggests that workers view reductions in compensation and reductions in employment as a breach of an implicit contract. Therefore, a switch from a defined benefit (DB) to a defined contribution (DC) plan or to no pension plan can be viewed as a proxy for worker distrust of the firm. This paper finds that both reductions in employment and reductions in wages significantly increase the probability of a DB-DC or DB-no plan switch. This suggests that workers view layoffs and wage reductions as a breach of an implicit contract.

Organizations consider trust as a pillar for successful operations in an increasingly global competitive environment. Some professionals go further and argue that in an economy trust is more important than natural resources. This book deals with ways to measure trust and its impact on organizational performance, as well as to understand the role of Management Accounting in creating trust. The author demonstrates that trust drives organizational performance, and reveals the key role of management accountants in facilitating the flow of trust between CEOs and line managers.

This book investigates the intersection between law and worker voice in a sample of industrialised English speaking countries, namely Australia, Canada, New Zealand, UK, and USA. While these countries face broadly similar regulatory dilemmas, they have significant differences between their industrial systems and legal cultures

As the influence of labor unions declines in many industrialized nations, particularly the United States, the influence of workers has decreased. Because of the need for greater involvement of workers in changing production systems, as well as frustration with existing structures of workplace regulation, the search has begun for new ways of providing a voice for workers outside the traditional collective bargaining relationship. Works councils—institutionalized bodies for representative communication between an employer and employees in a single workplace—are rare in the Anglo-American world, but are well-established in other industrialized countries. The contributors to this volume survey the history, structure, and functions of works councils in the Netherlands, Germany, France, Spain, Sweden, Italy, Poland, Canada, and the United States. Special attention is paid to the relations between works councils and unions and collective bargaining, works councils and management, and the role and interest of governments in works councils. On the basis of extensive comparative data from other Western countries, the book demonstrates powerfully that well-designed works councils may be more effective than labor unions at solving management-labor problems.

This book presents an alternative approach to monetary theory that differs from the General Theory of Keynes, the Monetarism of Friedman, and the New Classicism of Lucas. Particular attention is given to the work of Hawtrey and his analysis of financial crises and his explanation of the Great Depression. The unduly neglected monetary theory of Hawtrey is examined in the context of his contemporaries Keynes and Hayek and the subsequent contributions of Friedman and of the Monetary Approach to the Balance of Payments. Studies in the History of Monetary Theory aims to highlight the misunderstandings of the quantity theory and the price-specie-flow mechanism and to explain their unfortunate consequences for the subsequent development of monetary theory. The book is relevant to researchers, students, and policymakers interested in the history of economic thought, monetary theory, and monetary policy.
