The Book of Recounts is the third book of the Digha Nikāya, the Collection of the Long Discourses of the Buddha. As the previous ones, and because of their length, these are not discourses delivered by the Buddha. In this case, they are long suttas conceived to support the missionary work of the bhikkhus among an audience alien to the Teachings. The Book of Recounts collects eleven suttas, mostly lists of items, in which the last two stand out, Convocation of the Saṅgha and Superior to Ten, which are very useful enumerations to memorize the main points of the doctrine. Apart from these two suttas, outstanding are DN 24: About Pāṭikaputta, an amusing tale of scorn about a fool. DN 28: Inspiring Confidence, is an enumeration of how well the Buddha explains the teaching and its superiority to others. DN 29: An impressive discourse, continues in that vein. The rest, following the pattern of this Nikāya, are fake suttas, not even forged. They come marked with double asterisks (**). From giving blows to other ascetics and Brahmins to entering into excessive mythomania even for oriental taste, either of universal monarchs or of thirty-two marks which, gathered in one person, make this "great man" appear to us as a freak of the fair. And there is no lack of an enumeration of good and bad things similar to a list of commandments, ending with a sort of protection spell. The last two suttas alone make this book worthwhile.

Direct speech appears on nearly every page of the Hebrew Bible, and the large number of publications on direct discourse in the Bible highlights the importance of the subject for biblical studies. However, thus far only isolated aspects of the various problems that direct discourse presents have received attention. Studies of individual verbs introducing direct discourse, such as "answer", "speak", "say", and others are necessarily atomistic, even though appropriate in their own right. Other markers of direct discourse, such as "Thus said Yahweh", or "oracle of Yahweh", tend to be treated as theological constructs isolated from the larger issues of direct discourse marking in general. Speaking of Speaking aims to enrich the reading of the biblical text by offering a coordinated analysis of all such markers, not only in order to consolidate a considerable body of work that is often overlooked by scholars, but also to move further toward a synthesis that can permit informed generalizations not possible at the present time. This book discusses Ravanisation: the revitalisation of Ravana among Sinhalese Buddhists in post-war (after 2009) Sri Lanka. The Hindu Ramayana generally portrays Ravana as a cruel king. How and why, then, has Ravana gained the interest of Sinhalese Buddhists? This study takes an ethnographic perspective to answer these questions. Since 1914, the French state has faced a succession of daunting and at times almost insurmountable crises. The turbulent decades from 1914 to 1969 witnessed near-defeat in 1914, economic and political crisis in 1926, radical political polarization in the 1930s, military conquest in 1940, the deep division of France during the Nazi Occupation, political reconstruction after 1944, de-colonization (with threatening civil war provoked by the Algerian crisis), and dramatic postwar modernization. However, this tumultuous period was not marked just by crises but also by tremendous change. Economic, social and political "modernization" transformed France in the twentieth century, restoring its confidence and its influence as a leader in global economic and political affairs. This combination of crises and renewal has received surprisingly little attention in recent years. The present collection show-cases significant new scholarship, reflecting greater access to French archival sources, and focuses on the role of crises in fostering modernization in areas covering politics, economics, women, diplomacy and war.
