Discipleship seems elusive. We all know that God told us to make disciples. We want to build fully devoted followers of Christ, but most often, we do little more than educate and entertain. We make followers of churches, musicians, pastors, and authors all the time. It is easy. What seems difficult and time-consuming is making followers of a God who cannot be seen. We move from program to program, buying endless materials to support small groups. We mentor one-on-one, but there are not enough of us to go around. Why do we struggle so much to make self-sustaining, self-replicating disciples? How to Make Disciples follows Doug's journey from struggling to make a few disciples to having five generations of self-sustaining, self-replicating disciples of God. Packed with real stories, insights, and illustrations, How to Make Disciples provides a simple, proven, step-by-step process for making disciples. You will discover¿the secret sauce that resulted in Doug's five-generations-deep disciple-making culture,¿a simple and succinct definition of discipleship that clears up "what" we should really be doing,¿how to give disciples what they need, when they need it, as they travel along the very predictable discipleship pathway,¿the four foundational elements found in every successful discipleship model, and¿Doug's seven core practices as he helps people become prepared, confident, and skilled followers of God. Do you want those you lead to have the passion, life, and success you have? Whether you are a pastor, small-group leader, or layperson, How to Make Disciples is the answer you have been looking for.

Many Pastors and ministry leaders have experienced declines in active church membership. There have been pastoral resignations, church closures, and church mergers. These facts give rise to the subject of ministry sustainability. This project seeks to explore strategies to strengthen ministry sustainability via a leadership model which focuses on discipleship. Attention will be given to the characteristics of the first church, (Acts 2:42-46). These characteristics include ministry, fellowship, evangelism, discipleship, and worship. Of particular interest will be the active presence of discipleship, and the role of leader, to better ensure its success. This should be considered because while the first church added to the church daily (Acts 2:47), they were also credited for consistently demonstrating each characteristic, including discipleship, (Acts 2:42-46). With this in mind, other historical and modern-day resources will be consulted which define discipleship, leadership, and demonstrate elements of their individual and collective success. Old Testament and New Testament references will be explored. These will include Jesus’ model of leadership and elements of His discipleship strategy. Attention from the 21st century will be given to an African American Baptist Church, located in West Philadelphia. A case study of that church will chart their journey from the 1930’s to 2023. An introduction will be provided to their pastoral leaders, discipleship strategies, challenges they faced, in addition to other factors which contributed to their sustainability. Also, to provide current local perspectives on discipleship, a survey will be conducted with ministry leadership of local churches regarding: 1.) the role of discipleship in their individual journeys, and 2.) the role of discipleship in the congregations they serve. These results should provide current local perspectives. The outcomes of the survey should speak to the presence/absence of discipleship in their spiritual journey and how it has influenced their roles as ministry leaders. Discipleship models will be reviewed. Ultimately, a discipleship strategy will be developed. A focus group from the case study church congregation will be engaged, prior to implementation, to consider the potential effectiveness of the discipleship strategy. The results of this exercise will include the identification of elements that could cause the discipleship strategy to fail. Enhancements, if necessary, will be made. The projected timeline will thereafter include the strategy implementation through evaluation. The goal of the discipleship strategy developed during this project will be field tested with the African American Baptist church serving as the case study. However, the hope is that the discipleship strategy can be used and adopted by other protestant churches.

It is hard to deny that todayÆs world can seem apathetic toward Christians. Some may look down at their iPhones when we mention God, motion for the check when we bring up church, or casually change the subject when we talk about prayer. In a world full of people whose indifference is greater than their desire to know Christ, how can we dream of growing the church? In Contagious Disciple Making, David Watson and Paul Watson map out a simple method that has sparked an explosion of homegrown churches in the United States and around the world. A companion to Cityteam's two previous books, Miraculous Movements and The Father Glorified, Contagious Disciple Making details the method used by Cityteam disciple-makers. This distinctive process focuses on equipping spiritual leaders in communities where churches are planted. Unlike many evangelism and church-growth products that focus on quick results, contagious disciple-making takes time to cultivate spiritual leadership, resulting in lasting disciple-making movements. Through Contagious Disciple Making readers will come to understand that a strong and equipped leader will continue to grow the church long after church planters move on to the next church. Features include: Engagement tools for use in the field Practical techniques to equip others to make disciples

Sustainable Church is a thorough, Bible-based exposition of how the ministry of every church should be organically built around all of the Spirit-gifted followers of Jesus within that local body. It critiques the shallow pragmatism and unsustainability of non-organic churches and biblically showcases the sustainability of the organic church. "Body Discipleship" is a key part of the church's sustainability and the author explains biblically how it corrects the model of discipleship that has been popular for the last 2-3 generations. Additionally, Sustainable Church showcases the servant-model of biblical leaders who are supposed to equip the saints to do the work of ministry on behalf of Jesus, the true Pastor/Shepherd of every local church!

While most youth pastors are being regularly evaluated (or even scrutinized) for what they’re doing right now in the youth group, the reality is that the most important thing they are doing won’t actually be evident until much later. That’s because the biggest challenge for any youth ministry is helping teens embrace a whole-hearted devotion to God that lasts far beyond their years in the youth room. Unfortunately, much of youth ministry seems to be designed on the model of setting teenagers up for a “date” with God—a delightful evening that involves music, laughter, food, and light conversation. But what scripture calls us to is not a “one-night stand” with God, but a lifelong love of God that endures.Youth ministry educator and veteran, Duffy Robbins, offers youth workers a blueprint for building that kind of faith in teenagers. In this concise book, ideal for busy youth workers, they’ll be equipped to build a youth ministry that instills that lasting faith in its students.

Every church has them--sincere, well-meaning Christians who leave ulcers, strained relationships, and hard feelings in their wake. They don't intend to be difficult; they don't consciously plot destruction or breed discontent among the members. But they often do undermine the ministry of the church and make pastors question their calling.Well-Intentioned Dragons guides those on church staffs in facing the strenuous task of dealing with difficult people--even ministering while under attack. Based on real-life stories of battle-scarred veterans, Marshall Shelley presents a clear picture of God's love for those on both sides of the problem. He describes tested strategies to communicate that love and turn dissidents into disciples. Here is a book that will not only help pastors and church leaders preserve their sanity (and maybe their jobs); it will help them minister more effectively, even to those who make life difficult.

What if I told you that you were only one step away from unlocking new levels of maturity and growth in your church? The myth of the silver bullet still exists because we desperately want it to. We all prefer quick fixes and bandage solutions to the long, hard, slow work that produces real change. So the moment we learn about a new ministry or strategy and see its effect in another church, we run to implement it in our own. Unfortunately, this impulse is usually met by opposition, skepticism, and ultimately, rejection. What if the solution isn't a new model or a complicated strategy, but a shift in perspective? What if you could keep your church's current vision, values, and model, and simply make a few micro-shifts...leading to macro-changes? This book explores five micro-shifts that have the potential to produce macro-changes in your church. As you read, you will discover how to integrate these micro-shifts into the life of your church, starting with the way you disciple. You will finish by developing a plan to structure, communicate, and evaluate these changes to ensure that they take root and pave the way for lasting change and kingdom impact.

Question: What is the God-given purpose of the local church? Answer: Relational discipleship. DiscipleShift walks you through five key "shifts" that churches must make to refocus on the fundamental biblical mission of discipleship. These intentional changes will attract the world and empower your church members to be salt and light in their communities. Over the last thirty years, many influential church leaders and church planters in America have adopted various models for reaching unchurched people. While many of these approaches have merit, something is still missing, something even more fundamental to the mission of the church: discipleship. Making disciples—helping people to trust and follow Jesus—is the church's God-given mandate. Devoted disciples attract people outside the church because of the change others see in their Christ-like lives. And discipleship empowers Christians to be more like Christ as they intentionally develop relationships with non-believers. Through biblical and professional insights, Jim Putman and Bobby Harrington discuss the transformational effectiveness of making disciples and just how to do so, in practical terms. You’ll learn: The specific roles of a disciple-making pastor. The components of person-to-person discipleship. How each ministry in your church leads to discipleship. How to implement discipleship in your church. Disciple-making leaders will not produce perfect churches, but they will create effective churches.

Everyone is being discipled. The question is: what is discipling us? The majority of Christians today are being discipled by popular media, flashy events, and folk theology because churches have neglected their responsibility to make disciples. But the church is not a secondary platform in the mission of God; it is the primary platform God uses to grow people into the image of Jesus. Therefore, as church leaders, it is our primary responsibility to establish environments and relationships where people can be trained, grow, and be sent as disciples. There are three indispensable elements of discipleship: Learning to participate in the biblical story (the Bible) Growing in our confession of who God is and who we are (theology) Regularly participating in private and corporate intentional action (spiritual disciplines) Deep Discipleship equips churches to reclaim the responsibility of discipling people at any point on their journey.
