In this volume, the action patterns and activities of the golden eagle are described and most are illustrated in great detail. Names/titles are given for each action pattern, and those that are most useful in determining health and level of disturbance are discussed. There is also a brief chapter on the history of behavioral studies as they apply to raptors. The dangers associated with studying raptors at close range are presented and techniques are outlined for minimizing disturbance. Recommendations are also made for exclusion zones for various environmental stressors/hazards around eagle eyries and in prey concentration zones. This book on the behavior of the golden eagle is broadly useful because hawks and other eagles behave very much like the golden eagle. When a reader becomes familiar with the ideas and terms presented herein, he/she is prepared for doing behavioral research on dozens of species. The illustrations are also designed for use in training technicians to recognize and report healthy and aberrant behavior of diurnal raptors. Further, in a day when web cameras broadcast intimate details of bird behavior around the world, this book provides the lexicon, the nomenclature, for discussing all that is seen.

This comprehensive monograph is a second edition of one of the most popular Poyser monographs. It covers all aspects of this spectacular eagle's biology and ecology, including a full review of the literature and incorporating the considerable body of research on the species since the publication of the first edition in 1997. The late Jeff Watson was one of Scotland's foremost eagle experts, with more than 20 years of research on the birds; following Jeff's untimely death, the book is being completed by his colleagues Des Thompson and Helen Riley. Scottish studies provide the foundation for a treatment that also includes up-to-date information from work in North America, continental Europe and elsewhere. This global view allows fascinating insights into the species' relationships with a variety of different habitats and leads to many new and important conclusions regarding its ecology. This highly readable and authoritative account is the standard reference on the species, both in Scotland and elsewhere in the world. The text is enriched with many superb pictures of this majestic bird and additional wash landscapes capture the very special atmosphere of Scotland's Golden Eagle country.

This report serves as a source manual of raptors occurring on Army Corps of Engineers lands in the Pacific Northwest. It consists primarily of a comprehensive literature review covering aspects of the biology of 35 species of eagles, hawks, falcons, vultures, and owls. The manual was developed to provide biologists and resource managers with background information to facilitate the application of sound raptor management practices on project lands. While the literature is cosmopolitan, references are applicable to species found in, but not limited to, the Pacific Northwest. Approximately 4,000 citations, compiled through 1983, are included. General guidelines on raptor management and survey techniques are provided. An outline of techniques is given for habitat assessment, development, and management applicable to Federal lands, and recommendations are provided for management needs regarding various land use practices and recreational activities. Basic procedures for conducting raptor nesting surveys, migration counts, and winter surveys are outlined. Raptor studies conducted on project lands in the US Army Engineer Division, North Pacific, are summarized.

The Human Spirit

Publisher | : Penn State Press |
Total Pages | : 343 |
Release | : 2018-11-28 |
Genre | : Religion |
ISBN | : 0271082968 |
In this volume, Marjorie O’Rourke Boyle probes significant concepts of the human spirit in Western religious culture across more than two millennia, from the book of Genesis to early modern science. The Human Spirit treats significant interpretations of human nature as religious in political, philosophical, and physical aspects by tracing its historical subject through the Priestly tradition of the Hebrew Bible and the writings of the apostle Paul among the Corinthians, the innovative theologians Augustine and Aquinas, the reformatory theologian Calvin, and the natural philosopher and physician William Harvey. Boyle analyzes the particular experiences and notions of these influential authors while she contextualizes them in community. She shows how they shared a conviction, although distinctly understood, of the human spirit as endowed by or designed by a divine source of everything animate. An original and erudite work that utilizes a rich and varied array of primary source material, this volume will be of interest to intellectual and cultural historians of religion, philosophy, literature, and medicine.
