An acclaimed photographer introduces the incredible variety of stylish cyclists pedaling through city streets in this stunningly illustrated book. No city boasts of a more fashion-forward population of bicyclists than London. Photographer Horst Friedrichs meets his subjects in their own milieu: zooming around the city's streets on two wheels. There he encounters a dazzling array of style and a surprising amount of substance. In tweeds (both Harris and hipster) and Saville Row suits, in hightops and stilettos, in flowing skirts and the skinniest jeans, wildly tattooed and impeccably manicured, sporting bowler hats and racing caps, London's cyclists are jubilantly exercising their fashion freedom. Whether they're leisurely filling their baskets from market to home or pedaling purposefully to an important meeting, experiencing the city as cycling tourists, or getting from place to place in the most economical way possible, Friedrichs' subjects share a love of the bicycle culture that is sweeping the streets of London and the rest of the world.

With sequels, prequels, remakes, spin-offs, or copies of successful films or franchises dominating film and television production, it sometimes seems as if Hollywood is incapable of making an original film or TV show. These textual pluralities or multiplicities—while loved by fans who flock to them in droves—tend to be dismissed by critics and scholars as markers of the death of high culture. Cycles, Sequels, Spin-offs, Remakes, and Reboots takes the opposite view, surveying a wide range of international media multiplicities for the first time to elucidate their importance for audiences, industrial practices, and popular culture. The essays in this volume offer a broad picture of the ways in which cinema and television have used multiplicities to streamline the production process, and to capitalize on and exploit viewer interest in previously successful and/or sensational story properties. An impressive lineup of established and emerging scholars talk seriously about forms of multiplicity that are rarely discussed as such, including direct-to-DVD films made in Nigeria, cross-cultural Japanese horror remakes, YouTube fan-generated trailer mash-ups, and 1970s animal revenge films. They show how considering the particular bonds that tie texts to one another allows us to understand more about the audiences for these texts and why they crave a version of the same story (or character or subject) over and over again. These findings demonstrate that, far from being lowbrow art, multiplicities are actually doing important cultural work that is very worthy of serious study.

This is an engineering reference book on hybrid vehicle system analysis and design, an outgrowth of the author's substantial work in research, development and production at the National Research Council Canada, Azure Dynamics and now General Motors. It is an irreplaceable tool for helping engineers develop algorithms and gain a thorough understanding of hybrid vehicle systems. This book covers all the major aspects of hybrid vehicle modeling, control, simulation, performance analysis and preliminary design. It not only systemically provides the basic knowledge of hybrid vehicle system configuration and main components, but also details their characteristics and mathematic models. Provides valuable technical expertise necessary for building hybrid vehicle system and analyzing performance via drivability, fuel economy and emissions Built from the author's industry experience at major vehicle companies including General Motors and Azure Dynamics Inc. Offers algorithm implementations and figures/examples extracted from actual practice systems Suitable for a training course on hybrid vehicle system development with supplemental materials An essential resource enabling hybrid development and design engineers to understand the hybrid vehicle systems necessary for control algorithm design and developments.

The Invisible Bicycle brings together different insights into the social, cultural and economic history of the bicycle and cycling in historical eras of ubiquitous bicycle use that have remained relatively invisible in bicycle history. It revisits the typical timeline of cycling’s decline in the 1950s and 1960s and the renaissance beginning in the 1970s by bringing forth the large national and local variations, varying uses and images of the bicycle, and different bicycle cultures as well as their historical background and motivations. To understand the role, possibilities and challenges of the bicycle today, it is necessary to know the history that has formed them. Therefore The Invisible Bicycle is recommended also to present-day practitioners and planners of bicycle mobility. Contributors are: Peter Cox, Martin Emanuel, Tiina Männistö-Funk, Timo Myllyntaus, Nicholas Oddy, Harry Oosterhuis, William Steele, Manuel Stoffers, Sue-Yen Tjong Tjin Tai, Frank Veraart.
