Tomorrow, soldier. by Paul F. F. Hood is an autobiographical novel in four parts: Part One, subtitled Gun Oil; Part Two, subtitled Perfect Proposal; Part Three, subtitled Himmler’s Gas Station; and Part Four, subtitled Return of the 8017 Elite SS. The novel, set from the end of World War II through the onset of the Cold War until the beginning of the Korean War, chronicles one soldier’s ongoing quest for a “normal” life. Instead, Paul F. Barker, an army Staff Sergeant, finds himself in the midst of a characteristically abnormal world in-between-the-wars. He struggles with the trauma of surviving and remembering wartime horrors as well as the effects of global espionage on his friendships, intimate relationships, and business dealings. There is nothing “normal” here, nothing is as it seems, not even Marlene Dietrich.

The Star of Redemption is essential reading for anyone interested in understanding religion and philosophy in the twentieth century. Fusing philosophy and theology, the book assigns both Judaism and Christianity distinct but equally important roles in the spiritual structure of the world. Franz Rosenzweig finds in both biblical religions approaches to a comprehension of reality. The major themes and motifs of The Star—the birth, life, death, and the immortality of the soul; Eastern philosophies and Jewish mysticism; the relationship between God, world and humanity over time; and revelation as the real biblical miracle of faith and path to redemption—resonate meaningfully.

Lester Knox Little kept a detailed journal of his time in China and Taiwan. Covering the years 1943 to 1954 it provides important new insights about some of the most dramatic episodes in China’s mid-twentieth century history: Sino-Japanese military and economic competition, China’s domestic political struggle between the Nationalist Party (Kuomintang) and the Chinese Communist Party, and the post-war/Cold War balance of power in Southeast and East Asia. It also contains rich first-hand materials for understanding conditions in Chongqing and post-war Shanghai, the last years of the Republic of China on the Chinese mainland and its early years in Taiwan, and a new inner history of his beloved Chinese Maritime Customs Service. Little’s account, with his insightful comments and explicit descriptions, provides us with a continuous record from the viewpoint of a capable American citizen in Chinese employ who felt responsible for his Chinese and foreign colleagues and for the modernisation of ‘Free China’, as well as allowing a unique insight into the heart of government during a time of intense social and political change. In addition to the original texts, this edition includes extensive explanatory notes providing detailed contextual information regarding the people and places mentioned.

In 1994, an American woman and her seven-year-old son embarked on an adventure that took them inside a culture where the older generation remains closely tied to the past, while the younger generation attempts to move into a present that brings unprecedented change--the culture of Japan. Carolyn Underwood is a single mother with a full-time job as an executive in a pharmaceutical company. In this position she tests every cultural norm held sacred by a traditional Japanese citizen. As she and her son find their way through the Kobe earthquake, an important message is brought home to them--that the ability to lean on friends, neighbors and colleagues, regardless of national or racial mind-set, connects us all under a simple category--fellow humans.
