Tom Balles calls all those who offer care to a high standard to be present, with senses wide open. He offers uncomplicated practices for exploration; inviting us to sharpen our attention and deepen our awareness . . . . The book serves head and heart and will transform the caring experience for both giver and receiver. BARBARA CATLIN, Founder and Director, Bigger Conversations, Columbia, Maryland Over the last thirty years the delivery of healthcare has gone through enormous changes. The insurance industry, managed-care, the use of pharmaceuticals, and high-tech medicine have all grown exponentially. In the midst of these changes have we developed a bit of amnesia? In offering our care, have we forgotten the capacity of human beings to help heal other human beings? Have we overlooked the need to cultivate ourselves as instruments of healing? Are we in danger of losing the healing power of the relationship between those giving and receiving care? The tribe of caregivers is in need of some potent medicine. Whether youre at home caring for an aging or ailing family member, trained to be a volunteer, or working as a health-care professional, youll find powerful elixirs in these essays. Theyll remind you of the many healing capacities you possess as a caregiver, and of the great strength to be found in the healing relationship. Becoming a healing presence requires practice. Each essay is accompanied by practices that will transform your care and compassion into effective action and help you focus on what truly matters when offering care.

The Gospel of Mark is generally accepted as the earliest of the four accounts of the life and ministry of Jesus. Central to Mark's portrait of Jesus is an emphasis on his healing presence among the people of God - a sign of the living and active presence of God, offering not only physical healing but completeness and restoration of spirit in the midst of brokenness and pain. For Mark, this is the God revealed by Jesus in his public ministry: a God driven by an obsessive persistence to reach out to people in healing, sustenance and companionship. One of the ways we learn from the long teaching tradition of our church is by listening and sharing the Scriptures, broken for us each Sunday at Mass, offered to us by faithful preaching of the Word of God or by thoughtful reflection in classroom and other settings. The task of preachers, teachers and commentators is somehow to bring the selected readings to life so that they connect with our lives as we gather to worship, to listen, to be strengthened and encouraged in our life of faith week by week. This new series of reflections on the Sunday Gospels in the year of Mark are not concerned primarily to be a commentary on the text but on the message of the text; their purpose is not so much to inform as to inspire. The reflections by a master craftsman are written to unpack the Gospel - not simply Mark's special theological emphases but his teaching about how we are to live with one another in the stuff of the everyday. Integral to the book is the author's assumption that life and faith belong together; that God, the source of life and wholeness in our lives, is lavish with gifts to us, patient and energising for completion and healing, for life in its fullness. Here is a book that takes seriously the response of Jesus to those who cry out to him in faith for his healing presence and who look for that on going presence in his community that is called the church. The book is for priests and preachers, parents and teachers, and for all of us who seek the transformation and fullness of life that God offers us in the breaking of the Word and who have the courage and the wisdom to accept the challenges of the Word and incarnate its message in our daily lives. Peter Varengo is a Salesian priest presently engaged in full time Adult Retreat Ministry. He studied Theology at the Salesian University in Rome; and Religious Education in Maynooth (Ireland) and in Boston College (USA). He has taught at Catholic Theological College in Melbourne and been involved in parish ministry for many years.

Faith, science, and healing in theory and practice With Healing Presence, author David J. Shuch has written an impressive and groundbreaking guide to the theory and practice of healing in its many aspects. He proposes the idea that we need to re-examine and redefine what it means to be a healer and attempts to answer the following questions: What is consciousness? What is human life? What is healing? And what is the science behind the art of healing? --what practices and what capacities are needed so that one may be rooted in the face of suffering and helpful in fostering an atmosphere of healing? Readers will be motivated to reflect upon and question their own views as they study the book's teachings. Masterfully weaving together concepts from history, religion, science, and more, the author has created a unique theory of faith, consciousness, and humanity.
