El cuidado que las familias prestan a los ancianos cuando ingresan en una institucion hospitalaria ha sido poco estudiado y por lo tanto existen pocas referencias, de ahi la importancia de abordar el tema. El proposito de este trabajo es conocer el papel que asume la familia como cuidador informal durante la hospitalizacion del anciano: el perfil, lo que hace, su preparacion y como le afecta, las recompensas que obtiene con el cuidado y como se pueden integrar con el cuidado formal. Con un diseno descriptivo-transversal y enfoque cualitativo nos acercamos a la realidad de los cuidadores familiares que nos informa sobre la actitud colaborativa y su alta motivacion al cuidado y para deducir, como principal conclusion, que sin la presencia de los cuidadores familiares en los hospitales, el cuidado de los ancianos y la atencion a sus necesidades bio-psico-sociales, quedarian seriamente comprometidas debido a la orientacion sesgada de los cuidados profesionales. Este documento aporta, en definitiva, vias de solucion dirigidas a mejorar la atencion sanitaria hospitalaria que se presta al grupo poblacional de personas mayores."
