Tres momentos marcan la biografía de este vertiginoso ensamblaje. El primero es el despojo llevado a cabo durante la trata atlántico entre los siglos XV y XIX, cuando hombres y mujeres originarios de África son transformados en hombres-objetos, hombres-mercancías y hombres-monedas de cambio. Prisioneros en el calabozo de las apariencias, a partir de ese instante pasan a pertenecer a otros. Víctimas de un trato hostil, pierden su nombre y su lengua; continúan siendo sujetos activos, pese a que su vida y su trabajo pertenecen a aquellos con quienes están condenados a vivir sin poder entablar relaciones humanas. El segundo momento corresponde al nacimiento de la escritura y comienza hacia finales del siglo XVIII cuando, a través de sus propias huellas, los Negros, estos seres-cooptados-por-otros, comienzan a articular un lenguaje propio y son capaces de reivindicarse como sujetos plenos en el mundo viviente. Marcado por innumerables revueltas de esclavos y la independencia de Haití en 1804, los combates por la abolición de la trata, las descolonizaciones africanas y las luchas por los derechos civiles en los Estados Unidos, este período se completa con el desmantelamiento del apartheid durante los años finales del siglo XX. El tercer momento, a comienzos del siglo XXI, es el de la expansión planetaria de los mercados, la privatización del mundo bajo la égida del neoliberalismo y la imbricación creciente entre la economía financiera, el complejo post-imperial y las tecnologías electrónicas y digitales. Por primera vez en la historia de la humanidad, la palabra Negro no remite solamente a la condición que se les impuso a las personas de origen africano durante el primer capitalismo (depredaciones de distinta índole, desposesión de todo poder de autodeterminación y, sobre todo, del futuro y del tiempo, esas dos matrices de lo posible). Es esta nueva característica fungible, esta solubilidad, su institucionalización en tanto que nueva norma de existencia y su propagación al resto del planeta, lo que llamamos el devenir-negro del mundo.

This edited volume proposes a theoretical reflection on the different artistic geographies of East-Central Europe (ECE) from an interdisciplinary perspective found at the intersection of art history, art and politics, and critical geography. Contributors argue that this multiplicity is a defining feature of the region. At the same time, chapters employ the concept of “plural geographies” and call for an equal geography, based on solidarity and an equal distribution of capital, which could allow plural geographies to exist and be described. The “multiple geographies” of ECE consider the perspective of local conditions and emphasize how this region was part of successive empires with an important ethnic diversity and changing borders, giving it historical layers and multicultural characteristics. AfroLatinas as a subject of scholarship are woefully underrepresented, and this edited volume, AfroLatinas and LatiNegras: Culture, Identity, and Struggle from an Intersectional Perspective, offers an important and timely intervention. The consistent attention to AfroLatinas’ agency across all the chapters is empowering and attentive to the difficult circumstances of asserting that agency, and to the tremendous breadth of what agency can look like. This volume is a forward–looking intersection of Sociological perspectives on mathematics classrooms and socio-political perspectives on mathematics education. The first perspective has generated a substantial body of knowledge in the mathematics education. Interactionist research has deepened our understanding of interaction processes, socio-mathematical norms and the negotiation of meaning, generating a ‘micro-sociology’ or a ‘micro-ethnography’ of the mathematics classroom. More recently, socio-political perspectives on mathematics education interrelate educational practices in mathematics with macro-social issues of social equity, class, and race and with the policies that regulate institutionalized mathematics education. This book documents, strings together and juxtaposes research that uses ethnographical classroom data to explain, on the one hand, how socio-political issues play out in the mathematics class. On the other hand, it illuminates how class, race etc. affect the micro-sociology of the mathematics classroom. The volume advances the knowledge in the field by providing an empirical grounding of socio-political research on mathematics education, and it extends the frame in which mathematical classroom cultures are conceived.

Since the 1970s, neoliberalism has evolved from ideology to political programme, from political programme to public policy, and from public policy to constitutional rule. This process of change has been made possible through the endorsement of an uncritical, a-historical, and apolitical economic theory that legitimized technocratic despotism, financial deregulation, precarious labour, and constitutional-political emptying. This book examines critical perspectives in mainstream neoliberal development analysis. It examines the neoliberal experiment as a global historical construct through the cases of Africa, Latin America, and Europe. The analysis begins in 1980 with the Structural Adjustment Plans in Latin America and Africa, followed in 1990 by Maastricht in the case of Europe and the euphoric shift that took place, typified by the Africa Rising narrative, which attempts to promote the idea of an economically emerging continent. It also considers the weakness of the state resulting from neo-liberal austerity and fiscal stabilization policies, which have amplified the inability to collectively deal with the social, economic, and political impact of the COVID-19 crisis. One of the key features of the book is the extensive comparative analysis between regions, using case studies, including examples from African countries. The authors connect the different regional perspectives, included in the book, in a clear and coherent way, such that it will appeal to students and scholars interested in the social, economic, and political outcomes of globalization and will also be of interest to official development agencies and third sector organizations in Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa and Europe.
