Dorothy Sayers called William Roughead "the best showman who ever stood before the door of the chamber of horrors," and his true crime stories, written in the early 1900s, are among the glories of the genre. Displaying a meticulous command of evidence and unerring dramatic flair, Roughead brings to life some of the most notorious crimes and extraordinary trials of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century England and Scotland. Utterly engrossing, these accounts of pre-meditated mayhem and miscarried justice also cast a powerful light on the evil that human beings, and human institutions, find both tempting to contemplate and all too easy to do.

Excerpt from Crime and the Family While these discussions on prisons and criminal re forms have been prosecuted, little or no attention has been given to this terrible fact - the existence of crime itself. The existence of crime and criminals has seemed to be regarded as the necessary products of social development. Hence no investigations have been prosecuted to* search out the origin and source and cause of this terrible social evil, and ascertain, if possible, upon whom rested the responsibility that criminals were, somewhere in the bosom of society, being constantly educated into a life of crime. This subject is of the deepest moment, and an effort to fathom it can not fail to do good. It will at least open up the inquiry, and point out the mode of its proseca tion. These criminals were once innocent babes, drawmg their life from a mother's breast. They were once in the family, and have come forth from it, not to adorn and bless, but to prey upon society. By whose fault and neglect does this take place? And how can it be prevented, if prevented it can be? In the following'work, I shall endeavorto furnish a solu tion to these all-important questions, by endeavoring to ascertain the origin and cause of crime, and the manner in which these cau'ses may be removed, and the education of criminals prevented. The imperious Caroline Faraday runs her house like a Victorian fiefdom, unconcerned with the fact that it's 1931. Furniture and meals are heavy and elaborate, both motorcars and morning tea are forbidden on account of vulgarity. The Faraday children - now well into middle age -- chafe at the restrictions, but with no money of their own, they respond primarily by quarreling amongst themselves. Their endless squabbling is tedious but nothing more until one of them turns up missing and then dead, followed shortly by his petulant, whining sister. Though neither will be much missed, decency demands that Caroline Faraday hire the nearly respectable Albert Campion to investigate their untimely ends. Unfortunately, what Mr. Campion discovers will force the modern world relentlessly into Mrs. Faraday's stuffy Victorian parlor. A richly detailed and entertaining romp, with a fascinating resolution and an unconventional and winning sleuth - Chicago Tribune

Mystery crime fiction written in the Golden Age of Murder "Golden age fans will be enthralled." —Publishers Weekly STARRED review 'Adrian Gray was born in May 1862 and met his death through violence, at the hands of one of his own children, at Christmas, 1931.' Thus begins a classic crime novel published in 1933 that has been too long neglected—until now. It is a riveting portrait of the psychology of a murderer. Each December, Adrian Gray invites his extended family to stay at his lonely house, Kings Poplars. None of Gray's six surviving children is fond of him; several have cause to wish him dead. The family gathers on Christmas Eve—and by the following morning, their wish has been granted. This fascinating and unusual novel tells the story of what happened that dark Christmas night; and what the murderer did next.
