Winner of the 2013 CBC Overlookie Bookie Award for Most Underrated Canadian Book "These stories read like collaborations between Stephen King and TMZ with Borges and Nabokov on the edits. Each short story sounds with the thunder of a novel. Enthralling, dark, gut-busting stuff!"—Jeff Parker Actor Matthew McConaughey descends into a surreal desert of the soul, an admirer of Miley Cyrus performs a three thousand-word sentence in defense of his passion, an aging porn star dons a dinosaur costume to film the sex scene of a lifetime, and Leonard Cohen shills for Subway: these mercurial and wildly varied stories explode the conventions of short fiction. Spencer Gordon is the author of the acclaimed short story collection Cosmo (Coach House Books, 2012), the poetry collection Cruise Missile Liberals (forthcoming from Nightwood Editions in fall 2017), and three chapbooks. He is a co-founder of the ten-year-old literary magazine The Puritan, and his writing has appeared in The Globe and Mail, the National Post, the Toronto Star, and other forums. In general relativity, a naked singularity is a gravitational singularity, without an event horizon. In a black hole, there is a region around the singularity, the event horizon, where the gravitational force of the singularity is strong enough so that light cannot escape. Hence, the singularity cannot be directly observed. A naked singularity, by contrast, is observable from the outside. The theoretical existence of naked singularities is important because their existence would mean that it would be possible to observe the collapse of an object to infinite density. It would also cause foundational problems for general relativity, because in the presence of a naked singularity, general relativity cannot make predictions about the future evolution of spacetime. Some research has suggested that if loop quantum gravity is correct, then naked singularities could exist in nature, implying that the cosmic censorship hypothesis does not hold. Numerical calculations and some other arguments have also hinted at this possibility. To this date, no naked singularities (and no event horizons) have been observed.

Johnny Spedolini, or as he is called affectionately, "Professor Speedo" or "Johnny Speedo," is a young man from Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, who becomes a well-loved teacher in the years of the sixties through the nineties, Johnny is a devoted Catholic Christian and loves his church; he happens also to be gay in a time and place when being gay is not only regarded as a mortal sin, but can, indeed, cost the gay person his or her life. Johnny is certainly pained by the fact of his homosexuality, but even more, he is angered by contemporary religion's attitude toward homosexuality. The story revolves around Johnny's sardonic and angry review of his world, his quixotic railing against injustice in the world and his desire to do good and be helpful to others in this imperfect world. Most of all, the story is about the treasured friendship between Johnny, his student and friend, Joey and Joey's lovely wife-to-be, Angela. The love story of these three seekers after truth constitutes the true heart of the story.

This collection of writings by the author of Sons and Lovers presents his thoughts on religion, art, psychology and politics in a newly restored text. Though D. H. Lawrence was one of the great writers of the twentieth century, his works were severely corrupted by the stringent house-styling of printers and the intrusive editing of timid publishers. A team of scholars at Cambridge University Press has worked for more than thirty years to restore the definitive texts of D. H. Lawrence in The Cambridge Editions. Written while he was dying, Apocalypse is Lawrence’s final book. In it, he presents both a radical criticism of our civilization and a statement of unwavering belief in man’s power to create “a new heaven and a new earth.” This volume also includes Lawrence’s review of Book of Revelationby John Orman, and his Introduction to The Dragon of the Apocalypseby Frederick Carter. The Appendixes also present previously unpublished material on Revelation.
