Following the release of his mind-blowing first book, Playing with Fire, Theo Fleury joins forces with world-renowned therapist Kim Barthel in a new book, Conversations with a Rattlesnake, coming out November 2014. The book is a raw and honest conversation, loaded with personal insights and cutting-edge information about healing from trauma and abuse. Fleury calls Barthel the "Wayne Gretzky of therapy" and within their emotionally safe relationship he bares his soul so that others can learn from his mistakes, triumphs and new learnings. Fleury's story will inspire not only those overcoming their own trauma but friends, parents, teachers, coaches, therapists and health practitioners--anyone who is in the critical position of supporting someone who needs to share their own story. Co-author Kim Barthel provides an in-depth explanation of early childhood attachment and addiction that ties into the reasoning behind our behaviours and the science of how our brains work. Barthel explains how understanding groundbreaking scientific and psychological research can eliminate the unnecessary and damaging shame that so often accompanies abuse and trauma. Her dialogue with Fleury illuminates self-awareness, mindfulness and the power of relationships. Fleury's life experiences and Barthel's informed interpretation combine to provide a unique look at the healing process that is easy to read, entertaining and transformational.

Winner, 2020 National Outdoor Book Award, Nature and the Environment Snakes inspire extreme reactions. Love or hate these limbless reptiles, almost everyone is fascinated by them. Although snakes are widespread and frequently encountered, they may be more misunderstood than any other group of animals. From giant rattlesnakes to mating dances, there are dozens of myths and misconceptions about snakes. In Secrets of Snakes: The Science beyond the Myths, wildlife biologist David Steen tackles the most frequently asked questions and clears up prevailing myths. In a conversational style with a bit of humor, Steen presents the relevant biology and natural history of snakes, making the latest scientific research accessible to a general audience. When addressing myths about snakes, he explains how researchers use the scientific method to explain which parts of the myth are biologically plausible and which are not. Steen also takes a close look at conventional wisdom and common advice about snakes. For example, people are told they can distinguish coralsnakes from non-venomous mimics by remembering the rhyme, “red on black, friend of Jack, red on yellow, kill a fellow,” but this tip is only relevant to coralsnakes and two mimics living in the southeastern United States, and it does not always work with other species or in other countries. Enhanced by more than 100 stunning color photographs and three original drawings, Secrets of Snakes: The Science beyond the Myths encourages readers to learn about the snakes around them and introduces them to how scientists use the scientific method and critical thinking to learn about the natural world. Follow him as he travels the compounds and the villages of Binh Phuoc and the mined roads and rice dikes of terror. Feel the excitement of being shot at and attacked by the Viet Cong and living with death and killing on a daily basis. Travel through 196869 with a highly decorated soldier that loved his country, loved the army, and above all, loved his family and his God. Weep with him over the soldiers who gave their life and all the innocent children that suffered at the hands of the enemy. Cry with him as he notifies the next of kin here in the United States. Live with him as he reflects at the Black Wall in Washington, DC. Follow him on sweep missions, gunship fights, and night combat, not knowing if he will ever return. His story is one of fear, compassion, faith, strength, and love of country. Clayton Hugh Gilbertson was considered by some as a typical warmonger, but in essence, he was a man that valued human life, even the lives of his enemies. Clayton Gilbertson was one of many who served in Vietnam and returned home, becoming a Senior Army Instructor of the Reserve Officers Training Corp (JROTC) at Benton and Lafayette High Schools in St. Joseph, Missouri, for the next twenty-two years of his life. Clayton shares his personal reflections on war, both good and bad, as seen from the eyes of the battlefield in Vietnam to the political adversities in Washington. Share with him what it was like to come home and be called a baby killer. Walk in the boots of a warrior through an adventure that will remain with you for a long time. Clayton Gilbertson was a warrior with a purpose and a part of this countrys history. Put on your boots and follow this warrior into Vietnam.

Covered by Wide World of Sports, National Public Radio, and National Geographic, Texas rattlesnake roundups like those in Sweetwater, Texas, draw both fascinated tourists and irate protesters. Begun as an organized form of predator control in the 1920s, for many years rattlesnake roundups have been promoted as community events and civic fundraisers. The western diamond-backed rattlesnake is the main attraction, with pits full of thousands of writhing rattlesnakes serving as the featured spectacle. Often taking advantage of the animals' denning behavior to capture large numbers at a time, hunters deliver live snakes to commercial dealers who are contracted by event organizers to supply the animals as a source of entertainment: from snake handling and snake races to snake sacking, snake skinning, snake milking, and snake education activities. Rattlesnake products of various types are also sold and consumed at the events. In this close-up look at rattlesnake roundups in Texas, Clark E. Adams and John K. Thomas present perhaps the first full description of this social and environmental phenomenon, tracking its popularity, its participants, its opponents, its impact on the communities where it occurs, and, as much as is possible, its effects on the rattlesnake itself. In recent years, the commercial trade in Texas animals has emerged as a serious and controversial issue, and the number of roundups has declined sharply. Texas Rattlesnake Roundups promises to provide a balanced starting point for all those interested in knowing more about this curious custom.

A hundred and fifty years ago, naval warfare entered a new phase with the introduction of ironclad vessels. On March 9, 1862, the USS Monitor, prototype of this new class of warships, fought the Confederate ironclad CSS Virginia at Hampton Roads, Virginia, after the Virginia had ravaged the Union fleet blockading the James River, sinking larger, seemingly more powerful wooden warships in a potent demonstration of the power of an armored, heavily-gunned, steam-powered warship. In the world’s first clash between iron-armored warships, Monitor and Virginia exchanged gunfire at close range for nearly four hours. Neither inflicted serious damage on the other. While a technical stalemate, the events at Hampton Roads changed naval warfare forever. In the United States and abroad, iron and steam would soon replace wood and sail for warship construction. Less than nine months later, the now-famous Monitor was under tow, heading south to Beaufort, North Carolina, when she sank in heavy seas, with substantial loss of life. Monitor was a total and irretrievable loss; even the location of her final resting place became a mystery. Not until 1973 was the inverted hull located, and in 1974 excavation of the wreck began, under the auspices of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in partnership with the US Navy. The decision to place the Monitor in a protected zone—a national marine sanctuary—marked another historic first for the vessel. The story of this decision, the raising of the turret, and the subsequent management of the historic resource adds another layer of history to the Monitor’s fascinating story. Sidebars in the book flesh out details and add anecdotal color to the story of Monitor and of the efforts to preserve and interpret the site. Lavish illustrations (photographs, site drawings, and artifact sketches) complement the informative and highly readable account by the archaeologist who planned and directed the major expeditions that resulted in recovery of many of the Monitor’s most significant objects, as well as the remains of two Union soldiers who were only recently interred in Arlington National Cemetery, more than 150 years after their deaths.

Known as an advocate for the endangered earth, Barry Lopez is one of America’s preeminent writers on nature. This invigorating book invites readers to sit down with Lopez and his friend William E. Tydeman to engage with their conversations about activism, the life of the mind, and all things literary. Even readers who think they know everything there is to know about Lopez will learn much from this richly informative book, both from Tydeman’s concise biography of Lopez and from the dialogue about Lopez’s ideas and experiences. The three interviews and Tydeman’s reflections on other discussions with Lopez gathered here address nature, human beings’ relationship to the land, the tension between political activism and the life of the intellectual, memory and reconciliation, the artist’s social responsibility, and the business of authorship. "What is the nature of the relationship between the writer and the reader?" Lopez asks. It's "reciprocal, contractual, and moral." Lopez’s thoughts on the importance of authenticity will resonate with every reader or writer, as will his deep commitment to story in all his work. He and Tydeman engage in illuminating exchanges on style and genre, the publication process, and relationships among authors, editors, and publishers. Both men are interested in photography and its relationship to writing, a subject on which they offer thought-provoking comments. A comprehensive annotated bibliography of Lopez’s writings by archivist Diane Warner rounds out the volume.
