Parallel architectures are no longer pure research vehicles, as they were some years ago. There are now many commercial systems competing for market segments in scientific computing. The 1990s are likely to become the decade of parallel processing. CONPAR 90 - VAPP IV is the joint successor meeting of two highly successful international conference series in the field of vector and parallel processing. This volume contains the 79 papers presented at the conference. The various topics of the papers include hardware, software and application issues. Some of the session titles best reflect the contents: new models of computation, logic programming, large-grain data flow, interconnection networks, communication issues, reconfigurable and scalable systems, novel architectures and languages, high performance systems and accelerators, performance prediction / analysis / measurement, performance monitoring and debugging, compile-time analysis and restructurers, load balancing, process partitioning and concurrency control, visualization and runtime analysis, parallel linear algebra, architectures for image processing, efficient use of vector computers, transputer tools and applications, array processors, algorithmic studies for hypercube-type systems, systolic arrays and algorithms. The volume gives a comprehensive view of the state of the art in a field of current interest.

CONCUR'91 is the second international conference on concurrency theory, organized in association with the NFI project Transfer. It is a sequel to the CONCUR'90 conference. Its basic aim is to communicate ongoing work in concurrency theory. This proceedings volume contains 30 papers selected for presentation at the conference (from 71 submitted) together with four invited papers and abstracts of the other invited papers. The papers are organized into sections on process algebras, logics and model checking, applications and specification languages, models and net theory, design and real-time, tools and probabilities, and programming languages. The proceedings of CONCUR'90 are available asVolume 458 of Lecture Notes in Computer Science.

TACS'91 is the first International Conference on Theoretical Aspects of Computer Science held at Tohoku University, Japan, in September 1991. This volume contains 37 papers and an abstract for the talks presented at the conference. TACS'91 focused on theoretical foundations of programming, and theoretical aspects of the design, analysis and implementation of programming languages and systems. The following range of topics is covered: logic, proof, specification and semantics of programs and languages; theories and models of concurrent, parallel and distributed computation; constructive logic, category theory, and type theory in computer science; theory-based systems for specifying, synthesizing, transforming, testing, and verifying software.

This volume contains the papers which have been accepted for presentation atthe Third International Symposium on Programming Language Implementation andLogic Programming (PLILP '91) held in Passau, Germany, August 26-28, 1991. The aim of the symposium was to explore new declarative concepts, methods and techniques relevant for the implementation of all kinds of programming languages, whether algorithmic or declarative ones. The intention was to gather researchers from the fields of algorithmic programming languages as well as logic, functional and object-oriented programming. This volume contains the two invited talks given at the symposium by H. Ait-Kaci and D.B. MacQueen, 32 selected papers, and abstracts of several system demonstrations. The proceedings of PLILP '88 and PLILP '90 are available as Lecture Notes in Computer Science Volumes 348 and 456.

The innovative progress in the development of parallel computing systems and their increasing availability have caused a rise in interest in the scientific principles that underlie parallel computation and parallel programming. The biannual Parallel Architectures and Languages Europe (PARLE) conferences aim to present current research on all aspects of the theory, design and application of parallel computing systems and parallel processing.

A variety of formalisms have been developed to address such aspects of handling imperfect knowledge as uncertainty, vagueness, imprecision, incompleteness, and partial inconsistency. Some of the most familiar approaches in this research field are nonmonotonic logics, modal logics, probability theory (Bayesian and non-Bayesian), belief function theory, and fuzzy sets and possibility theory. ESPRIT Basic Research Action 3085, entitled Defeasible Reasoning and Uncertainty Management Systems (DRUMS), aims to contribute to the elucidation of similarities and differences between these formalisms. It consists of 11 active European research groups. The European Conference on Symbolic and Quantitative Approaches to Uncertainty (ESQAU) provides a forum for these groups to meet and discuss their scientific results. This volume contains 42 contributions accepted for the ESQAU meeting held in October 1991 in Marseille, together with 12 articles presenting the activities of the DRUMS groups and two invited presentations.

This book originates from the 5th LOMAPS Workshop on Analysis and Verification of Multiple-Agent Languages, held in Stockholm, Sweden, in June 1996. LOMAPS is an ESPRIT project devoted to program analysis and verification techniques applicable to emerging multi-paradigm programming languages. The volume presents 14 revised full papers selected from the workshop submissions together with 4 invited contributions; also included is an introductory overview surveying the state of the art in the area and putting the contributions into this context.

The algebraic specification of abstract data types is now a well establishedresearch topic in computer science. This area influences both applications and theoretical foundations of methodologies which support the design and formal development of reliable software. The Seventh Workshop on Specification of Abstract Data Types took place in Wusterhausen/Dosse, April17-20, 1990, and was organized in cooperation with the ESPRIT Basic Research Working Group COMPASS. The main topics covered by the workshop were: - Modularization - Object orientation - Higher-order types anddependent types - Inductive completion - Algebraic high-level nets.
