Since its founding in Delft in 1984, Mecanoo Architects has achieved increasing recognition and appreciation across the globe. With numerous buildings constructed in an inventive and innovative style they have set new standards in modern architecture. More recently their economics faculty at the University of Utrecht and the library at the Technical University of Delft have propelled them into the limelight. In this long-awaited publication 20 of their most significant projects of recent years are documented. In accompanying essays, founding partner Francine Houben, analyses the projects by means of 10 fundamental statements and explores those factors which give Mecanoo's creative process its distinctive quality - contrast, composition and complexity.

Release: 2011-07-18
Genre: Computers
ISBN: 3642225993

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 13th International Workshop of Descriptional Complexity of Formal Systems 2011, held in Limburg, Germany, in July 2011. The 21 revised full papers presented together with 4 invited papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 54 submissions. The topics covered are automata, grammars, languages and related systems, various measures and modes of operations (e.g., determinism and nondeterminism); trade-offs between computational models and/or operations; succinctness of description of (finite) objects; state explosion-like phenomena; circuit complexity of Boolean functions and related measures; resource-bounded or structure-bounded environments; frontiers between decidability and undecidability; universality and reversibility; structural complexity; formal systems for applications (e.g., software reliability, software and hardware testing, modeling of natural languages); nature-motivated (bio-inspired) architectures and unconventional models of computing; Kolmogorov complexity.

Concepts and Methodologies for Modeling and Simulation

Concepts and Methodologies for Modeling and Simulation
Author: Levent Yilmaz
Publisher: Springer
Total Pages: 359
Release: 2015-04-08
Genre: Computers
ISBN: 3319150960

This comprehensive text presents cutting-edge advances in the theory and methodology of modeling and simulation (M&S) and reveals how this work has been influenced by the fundamental contributions of Prof. Tuncer Ören to this field. Exploring the synergies among the domains of M&S and systems engineering (SE), the book describes how M&S and SE can help to address the complex problems identified as “Grand Challenges” more effectively under a model-driven and simulation-directed systems engineering framework. Features: examines frameworks for the development of advanced simulation methodologies; presents a focus on advanced modeling methodologies; reviews the reliability and quality assurance of models; discusses the specification and simulation of human and social behavior, including models of personality, emotions, conflict management, perception and anticipation; provides a survey of the body of knowledge in M&S; highlights the foundations established by the pioneering work of Prof. Tuncer Ören.

Theory and Practice of Contrast

Theory and Practice of Contrast
Author: Mariusz Stanowski
Publisher: CRC Press
Total Pages: 190
Release: 2021-06-09
Genre: Science
ISBN: 1000393666

The book Theory and Practice of Contrast completes, corrects and integrates the foundations of science and humanities, which include: theory of art, philosophy (aesthetics, epistemology, ontology, axiology), cognitive science, theory of information, theory of complexity and physics. Through the integration of these distant disciplines, many unresolved issues in contemporary science have been clarified or better understood, among others: defining impact (contrast) and using this definition in different fields of knowledge; understanding what beauty/art is and what our aesthetic preferences depend on; deeper understanding of what complexity and information are in essence, and providing their general definitions. Complexity means integration, value and goodness - concepts that seem to be neglected today. The book also has a high degree of integration/complexity, although each chapter introduces a new issue. The last chapter: "Binary Model of the Universe" draws attention to the need for including in physics the analysis of our mind and the resulting new possibilities, which include the mentioned (digital) model of the universe. Despite the difficult issues raised here, this study is written in accessible language and may be interesting not only for scientists and academics.

Release: 2018-06-23
Genre: Technology & Engineering
ISBN: 3319947060

This book provides readers with a timely snapshot of ergonomics research and methods applied to the design, development and prototyping – as well as the evaluation, training and manufacturing – of products, systems and services. Combining theoretical contributions, case studies, and reports on technical interventions, it covers a wide range of topics in ergonomic design including: ecological design; educational and game design; cultural and ethical aspects in design; user research and human–computer interaction in design; as well as design for accessibility and extreme environments, and many others. The book particularly focuses on new technologies such as virtual reality, state-of-the-art methodologies in information design, and human–computer interfaces. Based on the AHFE 2018 International Conference on Ergonomics in Design, held on July 21–25, 2018, in Orlando, Florida, USA, the book offers a timely guide for both researchers and design practitioners, including industrial designers, human–computer interaction and user experience researchers, production engineers and applied psychologists.
