At its 279th Session (November 2000) the Governing Body of the International Labour Office decided to place an item on the recording and notification of occupational accidents and diseases, including the possible revision of the list of occupational diseases, Schedule I to the Employment Injury Benefits Convention, 1964 (No. 121), on the agenda of the 90th Session (2002) of the International Labour Conference, with a view to standard setting under the single-discussion procedure. The Governing Body also indicated that the development of a mechanism for regularly updating the list of occupational diseases should be examined by the Conference as part of the above agenda item. Accidents on the road are so common place in our lives today it's easy to believe that there are plenty of support systems in place for the victims. Death and injuries on the road are construed primarily as medico-legal phenomena, re-inforced both by the way accidents are described and by issues of insurance and compensation for damage and personal injury. But there are many profound psychological and social consequences that remain underestimated. Margaret Mitchell has compiled this collection from leading researchers to examine this neglected area for the unseen victims: the families who have to cope with bereavement or a disabled relative, the driver who has killed but is medically uninjured. It will be of great direct value to psychologists, psychiatrists and other health professionals and will serve as a useful reference for those in the legal profession, voluntary associations and those with personal experience of road, traffic, accidents needing advice about where to seek further help.

The Effect of Vehicle Characteristics on Road Accidents investigates whether vehicle characteristics related to handling and stability contribute to road accidents. Using multiple regression analysis, this book addresses driver and vehicle effects separately in order to define both the magnitude of the handling/accident causation problem as well as the relative importance of the various performance measures. This monograph is comprised of six chapters and begins with detailed studies of accidents to determine the circumstances which lead to loss of control or overturning of a car on the road, and which accidents are likely to be influenced by the handling and stability characteristics of cars. Accident rates for these types of accident are then examined for the more popular models of car. Measures of vehicle handling and stability related to accident rates are also discussed. This text will be a useful resource for motorists and road engineers as well as transportation officials.
