In From Theory to Practice: Examining Millennials Reshaping Organizational Cultures, contributors to the collection focus on several interrelated issues. They examine the ways in which the members of the millennial generation influence how we work and communicate with our millennial students, colleagues and employees. They also elaborate on how to create work-life balance for the members of the millennial generation and explore ways in which millennials can be open and responsive to others in a society who don’t necessarily share the values, political views or desires of the millennial generation, nor the ways in which they prefer to communicate. This collection engages in a scholarly dialogue about millennials and how their actions within the workplace and needs within organizational cultures and everyday performances influence our communication with them. With equal importance, it addresses the question of how millennials can become more adaptable in their communication with others in society, especially within organizations with different generations, or cultures that may or may not communicate the way they do. Contributors suggest that the millennial culture should be carefully studied by employers, instructors, and researchers to create a better workplace experience, and to also improve the level of communication among different generations in the workplace.

A recent work/life study by MANAGEMENT TODAY revealed that almost half of Britain's managers feel too mentally and physically exhausted to do anything other than work and sleep, and nearly a third say their lives are out of control. Around half of the people questioned said they would switch jobs tomorrow for a better quality of life. Is it the way we work today that is causing this phenomenon or are we just not handling our lives as well as we could? THE BALANCING ACT offers the WHY, WHAT and HOW of getting more balance in our lives. It gets to the root of WHY we're out of balance, drawing on Fiona's own theories and interpretation of psychology, social trends and observations of the corporate world and says WHAT we can do about it. With original ideas to inspire us towards a new way of thinking, THE BALANCING ACT suggests HOW we can change our lives in easy steps. Written in a language clearly at one with the fast pace and issues faced at work today, this is a coaching book on how to get more balance in your life...your way, your style, your time.

Developing Women Leaders in the Academy through Enhanced Communication Strategies explores the experiences, strategies, and triumphs of women who have attained leadership roles within the academy as well as the shortfalls, disappointments, and battle scars many women leaders have experienced in their quest to lead. Clear direction, focused strategies, and enhanced communication are necessary to increase the ever-growing number of women in leadership positions in the academy. Contributions to this book discuss the ways in which these concepts have been employed to transcend the “academic ceiling” by creating mentoring networks for women, training programs, and other “ladders of ascension,” encouraging future leaders to be more assertive, self-assured, and strategic within the academic terrain. Scholars of communication, education, and women’s studies will find this volume particularly useful.

We are told that 'work is good for us' and that ill health is caused by 'individual lifestyles'. Drawing on research from public health, social policy, epidemiology, geography and political science, this evidence-based inter-disciplinary book firmly challenges these contemporary orthodoxies. It systematically demonstrates that work - or lack of it - is central to our health and wellbeing and is the underlying determinant of health inequalities. Work is the cornerstone of modern society and dominates adult life with around a third of our time spent working. It is a vital part of self-identity and for most of us it is the foundation of economic and social status. As such, the material and psychosocial conditions in which we work have immense consequences for our physical and mental wellbeing, as well as the distribution of health across the population. Recessions, job-loss, insecurity and unemployment also have important ramifications for the health and wellbeing of individuals, families and communities. Chronic illness is itself a significant cause of worklessness and low pay. Drawing on examples from different countries, this book shows that the relationship between work, worklessness and health varies by country. Countries with a more regulated work environment and a more interventionist and supportive welfare system have better health and smaller work-related health inequalities. The book provides examples of specific policies and interventions that mitigate the ill-health effects of work and worklessness. It concludes by asserting the importance of politics and policy choices in the aetiology of health and health inequalities.

Work in the construction industry is particularly tough. It demands excessively long hours and frequent weekend work. Other characteristics are particularly marked, such as re-location, job insecurity and distinctive behavioural patterns, which negatively affect employees’ personal lives further. Work–life balance has emerged as one of the most pressing management issues in the 21st century. For construction managers dealing with traditional models of work and rigid work schedules, the issue may be especially difficult to manage, and yet the work–life balance is now recognised as an issue of strategic importance to the construction industry. It is critical to the construction industry’s continued ability to attract and retain a talented workforce, and it is also inextricably linked to organizational effectiveness and employees’ well-being. This book presents the argument for the management of work–life balance in the construction industry. It maps the changes to the workforce demographic profile and the changing expectations relating to work and personal life that occurred during the second half of the 20th century. Legal imperatives for managing work–life balance are set out. It also presents work–life balance theory and discusses the practical implications of research, along with extensive empirical data collected from the industry. Lastly, practical advice is provided about what construction organizations can and should do to manage work–life balance. This provides a unique guide to a key issue.
