The presidency of the 45th president of the United States, Donald Trump, impacted many sectors of society. One of these was comedy, which became obsessed with Trump, who was himself a comedic figure. This book looks at this impact, called the Trump Effect, on American comedy—an effect that has changed its historical forms drastically.

The idea for this study came to me in the course of my reading of innova tive US-American! fiction of the last three decades. I observed that much of it is cast in the comic mode - or, more precisely, that there seems to be in contemporary fiction an affinity between 'innovation' and 'the comic' and that this affinity, furthermore, appears to be characteristic of postmo dernism. It is obvious, at the same time, that comic has become an elusive and, more often than not, a disputable category. Frederick Karl, in his sur vey of American Fictions 1940-1980, maintains, for instance, that much comic writing consists in ridicule that lacks deeper intellectual and cul tural roots. "Wit and mockery," he notes, "by themselves have little lasting value. Even in the best of such fiction, Gravity's Rainbow, one is made aware of attenuated skits stiched onto previous segments, rather than baked in by a defined point of view. " (Karl: 27) Such assessments of course challenge my view that the comic is in significant ways connected with what is innovative in postmodernist US-American fiction. Yet the term comic -or related terms like humour, parody, irony and so fort- is regularly and heavily employed in discussions or reviews of con temporary fiction.

From the acclaimed novelist (Henry and Clara, Two Moons), essayist (A Book of One's Own), and critic (1998 National Book Critics Circle Citation for Excellence in Reviewing)—an engaging new collection of essays. In Fact gathers the best of Thomas Mallon's superb criticism from the past twenty-two years—essays that appeared in his GQ column, "Doubting Thomas," and in The New York Times Book Review, The American Scholar, The New Yorker, and Harper's, among other publications. Here are his evaluations of the work of contemporary writers such as Nicholson Baker, Peter Carey, Tom Wolfe, Do DeLillo, Joan Didion, and Robert Stone, and reassessments of such earlier twentieth-century figures as John O'Hara, Sinclair Lewis, Truman Capote, and Mary McCarthy. Mallon also considers an array of odd literary genres and phenomena—including book indexes, obituaries, plagiarism, cancelled checks, fan mail, and author tours. And he turns his sharp eye on historical fiction (his own genre) as well as on the history, practice, and future of memoir. Smart, unorthodox, and impassioned, this collection is an integral piece of an important literary career and an altogether marvelous read.

God's Frying Pan follows one woman's journey back to God, along with defining her ideas of how he truly uses us in our own lives to learn his lessons. After being married to her "person" for nearly twenty years and having a beautiful son, Gemma believed her life was complete. All she and Scott had to do was continue to love and grow with each other through the rest of their lives. Moving to a new town for a promotion seemed like a great new chapter in their lives. However, things don't always turn out the way we expect. Embarking on the hardest season of her life so far, Gemma calls into question her long held beliefs about love, commitment, and marriage, while searching for meaning and rekindling her relationship with God. She keeps returning to the idea that God uses us as frying pans, giving us situations to help us learn to "cook," and it's up to us to learn how to "cook" them to perfection. Do they need to be flash fried (quick action)? Or is a slow simmer a better option (let things unfold naturally)? A rapid boil perhaps (constant attention)? Sometimes things are going to get burnt, other times remain undercooked, and that's okay. It's how we learn, if we are paying attention. Along the way, she experiences some powerful personal moments as she learns how to "cook" the various situations in her life to perfection.
