Excerpt from Christ, the Teacher The following pages were written during the work of a busy itinerant life. During years of preparation for the ministry, and many years teaching in a Christian school, more and more the thought impressed itself that the true ideal was in the great Teacher. This thought is presented in the hope that many may be stimulated to learn of him. The Authorized Version of the Scriptures has been followed, mainly. Conscious of the fact that in relying thereon, many times we may be led into slight inaccuracies, owing to the fact that sometimes the translation introduces figures of speech not in the original, and at other times omits figures found in the original, yet it seemed best for the purpose, in the main, at least, to so do. Besides, to depend upon the Greek text, entirely, would require a textual criticism far beyond the scope and pretense of this volume. The work is intentionally primary, and is designed to lead to a more exhaustive study of the ideal Teacher as a model. It is sincerely hoped that the mingling of the didactic and hortatory styles may not prove objectionable, but, rather, instructive and inspiring. With a desire to enhance the interest of Christ's kingdom among men, and with a feeling akin to that of Justin Martyr, expressed in the saying, "Fain would I, O Son of Mary, have said something great of thee," this work is submitted to the public. Excerpt from Christ as a Teacher Christ was a teacher democratic in the largest and best sense - for the people, for all the people, for even the lowest of the people, for all the people alike. If he had not been, our hearts would have turned from him as being unworthy to represent the Being who lighted up that sun, and poured the oceans from his urn. Excerpt from The Life Teaching of Jesus Christ This little book makes no claim to an exhaustive treatment of its great subject, nor even to be an original contribution to it. It is intended as an outline or introduction for those who are beginning the study, and who have no special critical or theological knowledge. The aim throughout has been to summarise the results of modern investigation from the constructive standpoint, and to show that when criticism has had its perfect work enough remains for faith and devotion. The subject is one which raises many problems of which no final solution is possible in the present state of our knowledge. The writer would acknowledge his obligations to many modern writers on the period, to some of whom reference is made in these pages, and among them especially to his old teacher, Dr. Sanday of Oxford, to whom all students of the New Testament owe an incalculable debt. Excerpt from Jesus the Master Teacher Probably an apology for studying the pedagogy of Jesus is not demanded by our day. Some may still feel that Jesus as a teacher should be only heard, not studied. But what if studying his methods unstopped our ears, opened our eyes, increased our skill - nay, even devel Oped our reverence? Excerpt from Jesus as a Teacher: And the Making of the New Testament To the leading series of chapters, a second one has been added on a somewhat related theme: the making OF the new testa ment. These chapters are a reproduction, with the necessary revision and enlargement, of a series of articles bearing the same title that appeared in The Disciple of Christ in 1884. That publication is not now living, but the thanks of the author are tendered to its publishers for permission to use these articles for the present purpose. The object and point of view of this second series of chapters are adequately stated in the introduction. Excerpt from Teacher's Manual for the Life of Jesus The purpose of this chapter is to show what was the actual, ' everyday religion of the Jews in the time of Christ. By way of introduction. Point out how religious ideas and practices are constantly changing. For example, compare to-day with but fifty years ago. Note the difference in religious thinking the emphasis to-day upon the kingdom, social Christianity, missions, upon the moral and spiritual rather than the miraca lous, upon the presence Of God in all the world's life. Note, too, the changes in the practical life and work Of the church, in buildings, organization, and the like. DO not allow this to become a discussion, but use it simply to illustrate that reli gion changes when it is really alive.
