This Volume is based on the Lectures presented at the Meeting "Chemistry at the Beginning of the Third Millennium", wh ich was held in Pavia, Italy, during the period 7-10 October, 1999. The Meeting involved the participation of scientists from German and ltalian Universities of the 'Coimbra Group'. The 'Coimbra Group', wh ich was founded in 1987, gathers the most ancient and prestigious European Universities, with the aim to promote initiatives in both research and teaching and to provide guidelines for the progress and development of the University system. German and Italian Universities within the Coimbra Group propose every year a theme for scientific discussion, which originates a Meeting to be held in a German or Italian University. The Meeting in Pavia was the fifth of the series and followed those of Bologna (1995), Jena (1996), Siena (1997), Heidelberg (1998). Each Meeting is centred on a topic from either humanistic or natural sciences and consists in aseries of lectures presented by distinguished scientists from the six participanting Universities. For the Pavia Meeting, the Steering Committee chose Chemistry as the topic and gathered researchers with experience in almost all fields of chemistry. In particular, during the Meeting, lectures were presented on many up-to-date subjects of chemistry, including: materials science, superconductors, supramolecular chemistry, bioinorganic chemistry, fullerenes, liquid crystals, photoinduced electron transfer, etc. The different topics were covered by distinguished and renown researchers of the various fields.

Receptor Chemistry Towards the Third Millennium is the result of papers presented at the 12th Camerino-Noordwijkerhout Symposium, held in Camerino, Italy in September 1999. Although much is known about the way ligands interact with receptors, which have now been isolated, characterized and cloned, many aspects still remain to be explored. In particular, differentiation into distinct subpopulations and the multiplicity of transduction processes offer more specific targets in the search for new drugs. This book will be of interest to medicinal chemists, pharmacologists, biochemists and neurologists and will also be a valuable source of reference for medical students and postgraduate students in related fields.

This work contains selected papers from the June 2003 XI International Conference on Chemistry of Organic and Organoelemental Peroxides, held in Moscow, as well as articles on theoretical chemistry, synthesis of valuable oxygen-containing compounds, and the technology and chemistry of polymers. Some specific topics include peroxide oxidation of arabinogalactan, hydrogen peroxide decomposition in the presence of manganese and copper porphyrins, and specifics of thermal and photo decomposition of peroxyalkynes in solution, as well as estimating the explosion hazard of organic peroxides, the role of nitroso oxides in photochemistry, chemical reaction by low power microwave irradiation, and the kinetics of lipid oxidation and lipid hydroperoxide decomposition in the presence of amphiphilic compounds.

Topology has been extensively applied in the study of chemically linked and knotted structures, and also in the study of many biologically significant molecules such as proteins and DNA. These are the themes that are addressed in this volume of the Mathematical Chemistry series. The topological chirality of knotted and linked molecular species and the invariants that may characterize them are explored in detail.

This volume presents the fundamentals of graph theory and then goes on to discuss specific chemical applications. Chapter 1 provides a historical setting for the current upsurge of interest in chemical graph theory. Chapter 2 gives a full background of the basic ideas and mathematical formalism of graph theory and includes such chemically relevant notions as connectedness, graph matrix representations, metric properties, symmetry and operations on graphs. This is followed by a discussion on chemical nomenclature and the trends in its rationalization by using graph theory, which has important implications for the storage and retrieval of chemical information. This volume also contains a detailed discussion of the relevance of graph-theoretical polynomials; it describes methodologies for the enumeration of isomers, incorporating the classical Polya method, as well as more recent approaches.

Building on the background of graph theory provided in the first volume of the series, presents a detailed examination of the role of graph theory in the study of chemical kinetics, reaction mechanisms, and quantitative structure-activity relations, in a manner useful to theoretical chemists. Among the topics are heterogeneous catalytic reactions, the classification and coding of chemical reaction mechanisms, the mechanist's description of chemical processes as it relates to aromaticity, and using operator networks to interpret evolutionary interrelations between chemical entities. This volume presents a comprehensive collection of state-of-the-art advances in the field of solid state ionic materials and the design, fabrication and performance of devices that use them, such as lithium batteries, gas sensors, fuel cells, supercapacitors and electrochromic displays. These electrochemical devices are becoming pervasive in our technologically driven lifestyles. The book includes research activities being carried out in the new millennium, through special keynote addresses, as well as invited and contributed papers, related to experimental and theoretical modeling in solid state ionics. The excellent coverage of topics arranged in such a fashion helps students and beginners to understand the field with enthusiasm. It also encompasses various experimental techniques often employed in solid state ionics research, such as XRD, XPS, hole-burning spectroscopy, EDAX, EXAFS, SEM, thermal analysis techniques, ac-impedance spectroscopy and other electrochemical techniques such as cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic and potentiostatic electrochemical techniques. Theoretical and applied aspects of mixed conduction for applications mainly in solid oxide fuel cells occupy a portion of the text. Finally, this volume demonstrates the amount of research activities being carried out in this application-oriented field.Solid State Ionics will be of interest to all in the solid state ionics community, including chemists, physicists, materials scientists and electrochemists, both in industry and in research.
