The Stolen Goddess: Book Two of the Kaphtu Trilogy Ducalion finds that the road to Hades is paved with bad intentions when he must venture to the deathlands in search of a kidnapped goddess. "Richard Purtill has done a masterly job of breathing life into what scant detail we have recovered, like the physical restoration which has raised the palace of M'nos up again, and built new walls to rejoin old, so that the modern visitor can imagine what a glorious thing once stood there--a breath and a step removed from gods and demons, where magic lived in the land." CJ. Cherryh "Richard Purtill is both a clear and commonsensical philosopher and an accomplished fantasy writer." Peter Kreeft, author of Between Heaven and Hell. "Purtill's tales of ancient Crete bring myth to life with exciting action, colorful detail, and magic. Don't miss the Bull Leapers!" Sara Stamey, author of Islands. Across the world, animals are being domesticated at an unprecedented rate and scale. But what exactly is domestication, and what does it tell us about ourselves? In this book, Marcus Baynes-Rock seeks the common thread linking stories about the domestication of Australia's native animals, arguing that domestication is part of a process by which late modernity threatens to undo the world. In a deeply personal account, the author tells of his encounters with crocodiles and emus behind fences, dingoes and kangaroos crossing boundaries, and native bees producing honey in his suburban backyard. Drawing on comparisons between Aboriginal and colonial Australians, Baynes-Rock reveals how the domestication of Australia’s fauna is a process of “unmaking.” As an extension of late modernity, the connections that tie humans and other animals to wider ecologies are being severed, threatening to isolate us and our domesticates from the rest of the world. It is here that Baynes-Rock reveals a key difference between Aboriginal and colonial Australian modes of landscape management: while one is focused on a systemic approach and sees humans as integral to ecological integrity, the other seeks to sever domesticates from ecological processes. The question that emerges is: How might we reconfigure and maintain these connections without undoing humanity? Written in the author’s characteristically frank, passionate, and humorous style, Crocodile Undone takes the reader on a journey across both physical and philosophical landscapes. This fascinating narrative will appeal to anyone interested in the vital connections between humans and animals.

From an opera-loving Labrador to a tooting bulldog, a chronicle of the character and personality of everyday dogs from a National Geographic photographer. Discover the stunning collection of photographs that shows the majesty, playfulness, and joy that is man’s best friend: As a National Geographic photographer, taking pictures of lions, tigers, and bears was a regular day’s work for Vincent Musi, but in 2017 he gave himself a new challenge: dogs. Using the same lighting and photographic techniques he uses for his National Geographic photography, Musi spent a year shooting portraits of dogs and compiling them into a book complete with all of the tail wags, wet noses, and dogs of all shapes and sizes. With delightful and informative bios displayed next to each portrait, The Year of the Dogs will have you entertained and doggedly coming back for more. “This gorgeous tribute to man’s best friend is the perfect gift for the dog-lover in your life—or anyone who needs to be convinced that dogs have just as much personality as humans.” —The Pioneer Woman “You’ve probably seen work by Vincent Musi before. He’s a regular National Geographic photographer and his work has covered topics like volcanoes, illegal immigration, global warming, hurricanes and the like. His latest book, though, is quite different in subject matter. It’s a book about dogs—your average pet pooch—and it’s fabulous . . . Paging through the book is a delight.” —Photo District News “For the dog lover who also loves photography, you can’t go wrong with this coffee table book from photographer Vincent J. Musi.” —InStyle (Holiday Gift Pick)

Maybelle Lane is looking for her father, but on the road to Nashville she finds so much more: courage, brains, heart--and true friends. Eleven-year-old Maybelle Lane collects sounds. She records the Louisiana crickets chirping, Momma strumming her guitar, their broken trailer door squeaking. But the crown jewel of her collection is a sound she didn't collect herself: an old recording of her daddy's warm-sunshine laugh, saved on an old phone's voicemail. It's the only thing she has of his, and the only thing she knows about him. Until the day she hears that laugh--his laugh--pouring out of the car radio. Going against Momma's wishes, Maybelle starts listening to her radio DJ daddy's new show, drinking in every word like a plant leaning toward the sun. When he announces he'll be the judge of a singing contest in Nashville, she signs up. What better way to meet than to stand before him and sing with all her heart? But the road to Nashville is bumpy. Her starch-stiff neighbor Mrs. Boggs offers to drive her in her RV. And a bully of a boy from the trailer park hitches a ride, too. These are not the people May would have chosen to help her, but it turns out they're searching for things as well. And the journey will mold them into the best kind of family--the kind you choose for yourself.
