This document provides basic information of relevance to users of 1981 and 1986 Census data on families in Canada. Concepts pertaining to the identification of families are described, as is the way in which the information is collected and the data processed to form families. This report also contains some data which are not included in the regular census products such as common-law relationships and the presence of children in census and economic families.
