Celebrate the heart connection between adopted children and the forever families who welcome them with kindness, care, and unconditional love in this powerful picture book from the author of Honey Baby Sugar Child. Carol Olivia Clementine lives with Mama Rose. Mama Rose is everything—tender and sweet. She is also as stern and demanding as any good parent should be. In the midst of their happy home, Carol misses her mother and father. She longs to be with them. But until that time comes around, she learns to surrender to the love that is present. Mama Rose becomes her “home.” And Carol Olivia Clementine concludes that she loves Miss Rose, “just like a mama.” This sweet read-aloud is, on the surface, all about the everyday home life a caregiver creates for a young child: she teachers Clementine how to ride a bike, clean her room, tell time. A deeper look reveals the patience, intention, and care little ones receives in the arms of a mother whose blood is not her blood, but whose bond is so deep—and so unconditional—that it creates the most perfect condition for a child to feel safe, successful, and deeply loved.

A mother listening to her child's heartbeat. A mother soothed as she holds her son's hand. A daughter grateful for the pearls of wisdom from her mother, gracing her neck in an invisible strand long after her mother's life on earth. Memories of special Easter dresses. A mother's purse full of delightful objects. A mother dancing around the kitchen as she shares music with her son while they mop. Shopping trips with mother's that are more than mere chores. The stories here celebrate mothers and the glorious world of motherhood, in all its variations. Mothers celebrating their own children, and children paying tribute to their mothers. Take a peek inside to join the celebration. In Celebration of Mothers, women share stories of gratitude. The contributors write of their thankfulness for their mothers, for what they've learned through the years, for the acts of kindness and sacrifice their mothers exhibited. If the mother has too short of a life, as in Redwood Park, or if she lives a long, full life to over 100 years old, as in One Hundred and Going Strong or My Mom, My Angel, a common trait is shared; a deep, abiding love for mothers and the state of motherhood.

About Mom Mom had her own brand of intuition and wisdom. Her biggest gift was her ability to love all her four children absolutely equally and unconditionally. The most valuable gift she left us, is the ability to love life, to see joy and beauty in every thing. To sing, to explore, to experience. To make friends and welcome people into our lives and hearts, unconditionally, non judgmentally. She taught us the value of humanity. Ours was a secular home. Every one was welcome and no one was an outsider. We celebrated every festival, we prayed to no one God. We simply lived good lives. Moms amazing feat was that she called every one for their birthdays, anniversaries, special occasions year on year. She never missed it. People young and old, from all walks of life looked forward to that call. People will miss that call. Instead of a funeral we celebrated her life of inclusivity. No ceremonies. Six different people from diverse communities said a short prayer each. We shared stories and sang all her favourite songs. We dressed her to look beautiful as she wanted to. We cut her cake and sang happy birthday. As her ashes flowed away into her beloved Arabian sea, we sang Abide With Me, a hymn she loved. Mom went the way she lived. Smiling, caring, living. I am grateful to the universe for this blessing. I celebrate the long life Mom lived through these memories. I hope to give comfort to those who have lost loved ones. Many much too early. Many in difficult circumstances during Covid. Thank you to friends and family and to Mom, who ensured that we all stayed connected, leaving us with a legacy of love.

A guide for families of all backgrounds to celebrate cultural heritage and embrace inclusivity in the home and beyond. Gone are the days when socially conscious parents felt comfortable teaching their children to merely tolerate others. Instead, they are looking for a way to authentically embrace the fullness of their diverse communities. A Place to Belong offers a path forward for families to honor their cultural heritage and champion diversity in the context of daily family life by: • Fostering open dialogue around discrimination, race, gender, disability, and class • Teaching “hard history” in an age-appropriate way • Curating a diverse selection of books and media choices in which children see themselves and people who are different • Celebrating cultural heritage through art, music, and poetry • Modeling activism and engaging in community service projects as a family Amber O’Neal Johnston, a homeschooling mother of four, shows parents of all backgrounds how to create a home environment where children feel secure in their own personhood and culture, enabling them to better understand and appreciate people who are racially and culturally different. A Place to Belong gives parents the tools to empower children to embrace their unique identities while feeling beautifully tethered to their global community.
