Bridge deck deterioration due to corrosive effect of deicers on reinforcing steel is a major problem facing many agencies. Cathodic protection is one method used to prevent reinforcing steel corrosion. The application of a direct current to the embedded reinforcing steel and a sacrificial anode protects the steel from corrosion. This 1992 project involved placing an Elgard Titanium Anode Mesh Cathodic Protection System on a bridge deck. The anode was fastened to the deck after the Class A repair-work and the overlay was placed using the Iowa Low Slump Dense Concrete System. The system was set up initially at 1 mA/sq ft.

"This report is intended as a guide for inspectors who are unfamiliar with the construction procedures used when installing cathodic protection systems on reinforced concrete bridge decks. The text has been divided into sections in an effort to simplify the report and make it easier to locate desired information. The first four sections provide some basic background information about cathodic protection. Section V discusses a general system installation; each of the major components are discussed to provide a basic understanding and act as a checklist during the installation process. Section VI discusses the various types of systems that have been installed, to date. This is not intended to be an all-inclusive manual. Rather, it is to be used as a guide to help overcome some of the most common problems associated with the installation of cathodic protection systems. It is meant to support and supplement good specifications, not replace them"--Page 1

This is the final report in a study to demonstrate the feasibility of using cathodic protection (CP) on concrete bridge structures containing prestressed steel. The interim report, FHWA-RD-95-032, has more details on the installation of selected CP systems. Past laboratory and test yard studies had indicated that overprotection could result in the evolution of atomic hydrogen and the embrittlement of prestressing steel. Systems utilizing catalyzed titanium mesh, conductive rubber, and arc-sprayed zinc anodes were installed on prestressed pilings and girders of the Howard Frankland Bridge in Tampa, Florida; and systems using flame-sprayed zinc and conductive paint anodes were installed on the soffit of prestressed box beams of the Abbey Road and West 130th Street bridges near Cleveland, Ohio. For most of the components tested, CP was achieved safely and reliably without reaching conditions that could result in embrittlement of prestressed steel.

This document provides explanation, guidance, and direction concerning cathodic protection of concrete bridge elements to the highway engineer who wants to incorporate cathodic protection in a bridge project. The manual which provides background information on corrosion fundamentals, is divided into 3 parts: design, construction, and operation and maintenance. An appendix provides standard specifications for cathodic protection systems for both decks and substructures. The document is intended to be a useful reference for engineers who design and prepare specifications or who oversee turnkey operations.

Revised and updated, this second edition of Cathodic Protection of Steel in Concrete and Masonry covers both reinforced concrete and masonry structures, describes in detail the overall design factors involved in cathodic protection (CP), and also provides a theoretical basis for why it works. It refers to the new European standard EN 12696 for cath

Anodes are a critical component of cathodic protection systems. A continuous research effort in Virginia is being aimed at searching for the most suitable anode for use in cathodic protection of the various types of concrete bridge components that are exposed to intrusion by chloride ions. As part of this effort, three different catalyzed titanium mesh anodes were tested, side by side, in a cathodic protection system that was designed and constructed (in conjunction with the rehabilitation of several concrete deck spans) to prevent further reinforcement corrosion-related damage to these structures. The purpose of this study was to determine whether this type of new anode is suitable for application in bridge decks, and if any of the three mesh anodes tested in this study excels over the other. It was observed during construction that the installation of these mesh anodes is compatible with the normal construction procedures involved in the rehabilitation of bridge decks. Observations made during the first four years of operation indicated that, among all the different types of anodes tested to date for bridge decks, the three mesh anodes tested in this study were the most effective. These newly tested anodes probably have a considerably longer service life than other anodes that have been tested to date. Furthermore, there was no significant difference in the operational characteristics of the three mesh anodes tested in this study.

Cathodic protection of reinforced concrete structures is a technique for rescuing corrosion damaged structures and, in certain instances, preventing them from corroding in the first place, and its use is growing. This book is for specialist contractors, large consultants and owners of corrosion damaged structures, and looks at international experience with this technique. It examines why corrosion is occurring, the differences in the application of CP with the stark dichotomy in its success and failure, and finally ways in which its performance can be improved on future installations. Information is valuable, as the success or failure of the CP system has a marked effect on the service life of the structure.
