Whitney, Water Colors by Mrs. C. W. Hawthorne, Pictorial Photography, February, 1918 When the history of American painting has been written for all time, two names will stand out prominently among the most important artists that this country has ever produced. They are Winslow Homer and John Sargent. The first of these men was born in Boston and was almost entirely self taught. He became a lithographer and then Harpers' corre spondent at the front during the early years of the Civil War. From this he developed into the foremost American marine painter. Later he took up the more summary medium of water color, working broadly for effects of light and color. John Sargent was born of American parents in Florence, received his first training in the Academy there, and later was a student under Carolus Duran. From this training he emerged a most facile portrait painter, being considered by eminent authorities the first portraitist since-reyno'ds and Gainsb.orough After he had acquired fame and fortune in this branch of oil painting, he gave it up for water color, with the interesting results here shown. This exhibition is especially remarkable because it brings to us unfamiliar work by familiar masters. All lovers of art are well acquainted with oil paintings by both artists but many of them have never had such an excellent opportunity to view and study their work in another medium. Excerpt from Illustrated Catalogue of the Notable Paintings by Great Masters: Belonging to the Estate of the Late M.C.D. Borden, Esq. We may wonder how it came about that an artist like Frans Hals, whom we picture mentally as a manner Of Falstaff, should be particularly successful in portraying ministers Of the Gospel; yet he painted many of them. It is clear that an under standing Of malve piety, such as was imparted by gentle preach ers, was not incompatible with the rough belligerent natures of that time. In fact, war itself aided in furthering the influence of the priests, for a nation whose chief preoccupation is the defense Of its territory is more apt to give the church its rights than a people living in peace and having time for reflection and therefore for scepticism. These Dutch ministers also seem to have fostered a simple conception of life quite in accordance with the practical problems so close at hand, and by means Of a jovial cordiality to have brought themselves close to their flock. Sibelius is not portrayed as a complex nature; on the contrary, his friendly bearing, the clear, intelligent look in his small eyes, the encouraging, eloquent position Of his hands, do not reveal a man of philosophical and speculative mind with thoughts running in deep channels, but one Of simple nature who understands his immediate task of heartening and com forting. The artist himself was the same sort Of man as his sitter. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The dog is standing athwart the View, facing the left, his head up and tongue lolling lightly. The grayish white and yellowish-brown coat is strongly marked, and the long, bushy tail hangs in a deep loop-curve. The sunshine throws a bit of a shadow on the light green short grass at his feet, and a few detached trees appear in the distance before more distant low hills.
