Fighting against the images, she could not see their faces, nor could she determine the time, the place, or what was responsible for the event. “Who are those people?” she thought. Where are they going? What was to become of them?” she asked herself. “How can I, a young girl, convince them of what is coming and what must be done?” All this she pondered and was filled with anxiety. Cassandra Wright is a young girl living in Maine at the turn of the twentieth century. She has dreams of a pending disaster—a mystery that needs to be solved. Her visions transport her through family history from the American Revolution, her Irish ancestors and their journey to America, the war between the states, life in Maine, and visions far into her future. Her story is about love—love of family, love of heritage, love of Maine and its people. There is a mystery to be solved, and Cassie must find the answers.

This collection of rare photographs chronicles the construction of one of the largest masonry dams ever built. From the beginnings of the first Croton Dam, completed in 1842, and of the new dam, which was finished in 1907, up to the present day, The Croton Dams and Aqueduct provides a stunning portrait of the entire project and the region that it impacted: New York City and Westchester County. As early as the 1770s, New York considered creating waterworks and even proposed damming area rivers, including the Hudson. With disease and fires blamed on the lack of water, plans were created c. 1830 to dam the Croton River. By 1842, water from the first dam flowed into New York City from Yorktown. Built to provide enough water for "centuries," the first dam was obsolete by the 1880s. Exponential growth from immigration created the demand for more water, and New York built the New Croton Dam. The new dam not only provided clean water for New York's burgeoning population but also spawned a new community of immigrant workers in the once Anglo community of Westchester County.

This is the story of Cassie: a rescue dog who was just over two years old when she joined Brian and Juliet's family of rescues, having already had three previous owners in her short life. The tiny little terrier soon wormed her way into the hearts of the family, and her antics and oversized attitude quickly earned her the nicknames 'The Mad Ferret' and 'The Wicked Witch of the West.' Cassie can best be described as a 'pocket dynamo' or, as the author puts it, "She is filled with boundless energy, and despite being fourteen years old now, she's like a Duracell bunny without an off switch." Cassie has bounced back from operations, managed to get lost and found in one afternoon, chased away Rottweilers and Dobermans that have had the nerve to try and steal her tennis ball, and found herself being injured by interfering in larger dogs' squabbles. People just can't help falling in love with this tiny bundle of joy. Cassie's Tale is the third book in Brian L. Porter's series of rescue dogs, following on from the award-winning bestsellers, Sasha and Sheba: From Hell to Happiness.

“One of hip-hop’s greatest MCs, unpacking his harrowing, remarkable journey in his own words, with enough insights for two lifetimes.”—Lin-Manuel Miranda, award-winning songwriter, producer, director, and creator of In the Heights and Hamilton From one of our generation’s most powerful artists and incisive storytellers comes a brilliantly crafted work about the art—and war—of becoming who we are. upcycle verb up·cy·cle ˈəp-ˌsī-kəl : to recycle (something) in such a way that the resulting product is of a higher value than the original item : to create an object of greater value from (a discarded object of lesser value) Today Tariq Trotter—better known as Black Thought—is the platinum-selling, Grammy-winning co-founder of The Roots and one of the most exhilaratingly skillful and profound rappers our culture has ever produced. But his story begins with a tragedy: as a child, Trotter burned down his family’s home. The years that follow are the story of a life snatched from the flames, forged in fire. In The Upcycled Self, Trotter doesn’t only narrate a riveting and moving portrait of the artist as a young man, he gives readers a courageous model of what it means to live an examined life. In vivid vignettes, he tells the dramatic stories of the four powerful relationships that shaped him—with community, friends, art, and family—each a complex weave of love, discovery, trauma, and loss. And beyond offering the compellingly poetic account of one artist’s creative and emotional origins, Trotter explores the vital questions we all have to confront about our formative years: How can we see the story of our own young lives clearly? How do we use that story to understand who we’ve become? How do we forgive the people who loved and hurt us? How do we rediscover and honor our first dreams? And, finally, what do we take forward, what do we pass on, what do we leave behind? This is the beautifully bluesy story of a boy genius’s coming-of-age that illuminates the redemptive power of the upcycle.
