Excerpt from Canadian Wheat Marketing To Canadian wheat producers, this kind of market ing was not new. It evolved from an elevator monopoly prior to 1917 and to Prairie wheat cooperatives in the 1920's and' early 1930's, and was primarily in response to their demand for improved marketing conditions. The Canadian Wheat Board has given the farmers a greater bargaining power than they as individuals or even as cooperatives would ever possess. Grading and inspection, which have gone along way toward giving Canadian wheat its high reputation, are in the hands of the Board of Grain Commissioners, an agency of the Department of Agriculture. Excerpt from Wheat: A Practical Discussion of the Raising, Marketing, Handling and Use of the Wheat Crop, Relating Largely to the Great Plains Region of the United States and Canada This little book deals largely with the wheat culture of the Great Plains region of the United States and Canada, but the writer has attempted also, to give some general information on the raising, marketing, handling and use of the wheat crop. This book is not technical but treats the subject in a practical way and is written especially for the study and use of those who are engaged in wheat farming. During my fifteen years experience in wheat farming, five years in North Dakota and ten years in Kansas, in connection with the state agricultural colleges, I have gained some special knowledge of culture methods and practice which may be of value to others who are engaged in the wheat growing business. In preparing the following pages I have also consulted other authorities on the subject and have frequently quoted from wheat books and bulletins. I wish to refer especially to "Cereals in America" by Thomas F. Hunt, and the "Book of Wheat" by Peter Tracy Dondlinger as being among the best authorities on the subject. For the illustrations shown in figures 1, 4, 6, 7, 8, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16 and 22, I am indebted to the courtesy of the Kansas experiment station and the Ft. Hays branch station. Excerpt from The Economic Results of the Specialist Production and Marketing of Wheat The great bulk of the agricultural capital employed in the Canadian Northwest is in fact supplied by railway companies, loan companies, banks, implement companies and general dealers. It is only in this way that farmers having little or no agricultural capital at the outset have been able to establish themselves. Moreover, the natural fertility of the unexhausted soil is so great that a very small amount of capital is required per acre. It has consequently been possible to bring a vast area under cultivation by means of a relatively small amount of agricultural capital. Excerpt from Cooperative Grain Marketing: A Comparative Study of Methods in the United States and in Canada Because the Canadian farmers' companies have entered the termi nal markets and in other ways have carried their marketing activities further than have the single - unit type of farmers' elevators in the middle western section of the United States, some have thought that the American farmers erred in their scheme of organiza tion and that the Canadian type of organization is the correct type for this country as a whole. It is not the purpose of this bulletin to try to establish which is the correct type, but rather to segregate and distinguish certain conditions and factors relating to the operation of different types of organizations and to assist the reader to a better understanding of Cooperative grain marketing as carried on in various parts of the United States and in Canada. In the collection of material for this study, personal visits were made to typical organizations representing different types and oper ating conditions; and numerous interviews were held with persons variously engaged in grain marketing in this country and in Canada.
