Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Excerpt from Canadian Forestry Journal, 1914, Vol. 10 Dr. B. E. Fernow, dean of the Faculty of Forestry of Toronto University, in his report on the Trent watershed, showed the serious consequences which have followed the agricultural settlement of a district which, for the most part, was essentially non-agricultural in character. The soil having quickly become impoverished from cultivation, the people who remained on the poorer lands were existing under undesirable economic conditions. Repeated fires had destroyed a young growth having a potential stumpage value of millions of dollars, besides facilitating erosion and so changing the composition of the forest that its possible future value was greatly decreased.
