Abstract: The dwarf mistletoe parasitizing bristlecone pine on the San Francisco Peaks, Arizona is shown to be Arceuthobium microcarpum, instead of A. cyanocarpum as reported previously. The dwarf mistletoe causes serious localized damage, but it is not considered to be a serious threat to the bristlecone pine population.

Interweaving lovely, meticulously drawn pictures with a story line that spans 5,000 years, Alexandra Siy invites young naturalists to explore the secrets of the world's oldest trees--secrets of the earth's climate, recorded in their tree rings, and secrets of the bristlecones' resilience, as a species that lives in the harshest of environments. Living for more than five thousand years, ancient bristlecone pines are the oldest trees on Earth. Recorded in their rings are "secrets"--scientific evidence of a changing planet. A volcano erupts in 2036 BC. In 775, a storm explodes on the sun. Lightning strikes in 1122. And during the 20th century, the temperature increases dramatically. What is the secret to the bristlecone's exceptionally long life? Alexandra Siy's lyrical text, paired with Marlo Garnsworthy's meticulously researched mixed media paintings, reveals the life cycle of the mysterious ancient bristlecone pine. "Still growing, safe and strong in its place in the sun, the bristlecone's secrets are waiting to be discovered by anyone who can read its rings."

It is a pleasure to present the proceedings of the 22nd European Conference on Object-Oriented Programming (ECOOP 2008) held in Paphos, Cyprus. The conference continues to serve a broad object-oriented community with a tech- cal program spanning theory and practice and a healthy mix of industrial and academic participants. This year a strong workshop and tutorial program c- plementedthemaintechnicaltrack.Wehad13workshopsand8tutorials,aswell as the co-located Dynamic Language Symposium (DLS). Finally, the program was rounded out with a keynote by Rachid Guerraoui and a banquet speech by James Noble. As in previous years, two Dahl-Nygaard awards were selected by AITO, and for the ?rst time, the ECOOP Program Committee gave a best paper award. Theproceedingsinclude27papersselectedfrom138submissions.Thepapers werereviewed in a single-blind process with three to ?ve reviews per paper. The - sponses were discussed at the PC meeting and were instrumental in reaching decisions. The PC discussions followed Oscar Nierstrasz’Champion pattern. PC papers had ?ve reviews and were held at a higher standard.

Over the past thirty years, late Quaternary environments in the arid interior of western North America have been revealed by a unique source of fossils: well-preserved fragments of plants and animals accumulated locally by packrats and quite often encased, amberlike, in large masses of crystallized urine. These packrat middens are ubiquitous in caves and rock crevices throughout the arid West, where they can lie preserved for tens of thousands of years. More than a thousand of these deposits have been dated and analyzed, and middens have supplanted pollen records as a touchstone for studying vegetation dynamics and climatic change in radiocarbon time (the last 40,000 years). Now, similar deposits made by other mammals like hyraxes are being reported from other parts of the world. This book brings together the findings and views of many of the researchers investigating fossil middens in the United States, Mexico, Africa, the Middle East, and Australia. The contributions serve to open a forum for methodological concerns, update the fossil record of various geographic regions, introduce new applications, and display the vast potential for fossil midden analysis in arid regions worldwide. The findings presented here will serve to foster regional research and to promote general studies devoted to global climate change. Included in the text are more than two hundred charts, photographs, and maps.
