Excerpt from Bookkeeping and Cost Accounting for Factories The author of this treatise was a bookkeeper and cost accountant for some years before he became an engineer, and many times during his career as an engineer and as manager of works he had occasion to install systems of bookkeeping and cost accounting and to audit books. In this way, and by reading much of the extensive literature on accounting, he has kept in touch for over forty years with the development of accounting practice. More than twenty years ago he was urged by the president of one of the largest manufacturing corporations in New England to write a book on factory cost accounting, but he was then too busy with other matters and the suggested book had to be postponed to the indefinite future. Some three years ago the suggestion was repeated at a conference of several professional accountants, who agreed that the literature on cost accounting was in a most chaotic shape and was altogether unsatisfactory. The recent financial crisis has sparked debates surrounding the nature and role of accounting in informing capital markets and regulatory bodies about the financial performance and position of a firm. These debates have drawn attention to the broader implications of accounting for the economy and society. Accounting and Business Economics brings together leading international scholars to examine the current state of accounting theory and its fundamental connection with the economics and finance of firms, viewing the business entity from not only accounting, but also national, economic, social, political, juridical, anthropological, and moral points of view.

Excerpt from Manufacturing Costs and Accounts While many excellent treatises exist on Cost Accounting, there is none, as far as I know, that can be placed in the hands Of a student for the purpose of gradually introducing him to the underlying principles on which manufacturing accounting of all 'kinds must rest. The March 1930 issue of the rare pulp magazine SUBMARINE STORIES, which lasted for thirteen issues and so must count as one of the more successful of the hyper-specialized pulps. Long prized by collectors as a curiosity, too scarce and valuable to be actually read, it turns out to be quite an entertaining magazine, containing stories by such pulp stalwarts as George Fielding Eliot (author of the grisly WEIRD TALES classic "The Copper Bowl") and Alan R. Bosworth, a prolific pulp writer who appeared in everything from ARGOSY to UNKNOWN WORLDS. Here too is a vivid first-hand account of undersea warfare by a genuine German U-boat captain.
