Is Christian ‘tradition’ to be maintained as the absolute body of truth? Can it be used selectively depending on the preferences of individual believers? What can ‘religious truth’ possibly mean in our age of opinions and overwhelming cultural diversity? These are unsettling questions for Christians, their effect aggravated by our daily encounter with non-western cultures and non-Christian religions, and by the increasing presentation of secularism and atheism as the ‘normal’ way of life. In Never-Ending Prayer, Bert Hoedemaker outlines the continuing importance of tradition, while showing that in facing these challenges our understanding of tradition needs a ‘reset’. Drawing on his own experiences of world Christianity, he reconstructs the Christian tradition in such a way that it no longer defines and defends itself as a specific body of concepts and practices over against ’the world’ but as a living community originating in and remaining in interaction with humanity’s permanent struggles. It is presented as a system of religious imagination in which prayer is the driving force and reconciliation is seen as the destination of humankind.

Zen is not a religion, it is living life in its totality, herenow. Religions are always postponing life: they are giving you beautiful illusions about life somewhere in the future, far away, beyond death. That is a strategy to divert and distract you from the realities of life. That is pure cowardice. It is also a rationalization so that you can be consoled: ’If life is miserable today there is nothing to be worried about, tomorrow everything is going to be well. In fact, to suffer life today is a preparation for enjoying life tomorrow, so the more you suffer the better. There is no reason to complain, no reason to rebel, no reason to revolt against all those things which are causing misery.’

If I am asked in the framework of Book 1, “Who are you?” I, in answering, might say “I don’t know who in the world I am.” Nevertheless there is a sense in which I always know what “I” refers to and can never not know, even if I have become, e.g., amnesiac. Yet in Book 2, “Who are you?” has other senses of oneself in mind than the non-sortal “myself”. For example, it might be the pragmatic context, as in a bureaucratic setting; but “Who are you?” or “Who am I?” might be more anguished and be rendered by “What sort of person are you?” or “What sort am I?” Such a question often surfaces in the face of a “limit-situation”, such as one’s death or in the wake of a shameful deed where we are compelled to find our “centers”, what we also will call “Existenz”. “Existenz” here refers to the center of the person. In the face of the limit-situation one is called upon to act unconditionally in the determination of oneself and one’s being in the world. In this Book 2 we discuss chiefly one’s normative personal-moral identity which stands in contrast to the transcendental I where one’s non-sortal unique identity is given from the start. This moral identity requires a unique self-determination and normative self-constitution which may be thought of with the help of the metaphor of “vocation”. We will see that it has especial ties to one’s Existenz as well as to love. This Book 2 claims that the moral-personal ideal sense of who one is is linked to the transcendental who through a notion of entelechy. The person strives to embody the I-ness that one both ineluctably is and which, however, points to who one is not yet and who one ought to be. The final two chapters tell a philosophical-theological likely story of a basic theme of Plotinus: We must learn to honor ourselves because of our honorable kinship and lineage “Yonder”.

Before the earth existed, Lucifer was created by God as a perfect and beautiful cherub. His four faces represent the image of the man, the lion, the eagle, and the ox. His two sets of wings and outer garment or covering of brightly shimmering gems and even gold was glorious. With these magnificent attributes and perfection, God the Father elevated Lucifer to a position of power. After becoming prideful and obsessed with himself, Lucifer sinned and attacked heaven with his army of angels. Jesus described the scene, saying, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven” (Luke 10:18). Satan took his angels and cherubim with him (Revelation 12:4). How could sin change this favored cherub into what is described as an evil dragon or serpent? His sin, as in all sins, separated him from God! Without God, doing what is right is impossible. Satan’s idea of “right” no longer coincided with God’s point of view. For example, Satan was now able to lie. God will never lie (Numbers 23:19). There is much written about Satan, his fallen angels, the fallen angels’ offspring, and the demonic forces he controls. With scripture as our anchor, we will explore Apocryphal books, legends across the globe, and archeological records to confirm what the Bible says about Satan. Even the unspoken record found in the names of stars. The zodiac and decan constellations, have much to reveal about this enemy of God and man. Find out what Satan does not want you to know!
