This report issues a call for urgent action to combat the growing epidemic of obesity, which now affects developing and industrialized countries alike. In 1950 men and women in the United States had a combined life expectancy of 68.9 years, the 12th highest life expectancy at birth in the world. Today, life expectancy is up to 79.2 years, yet the country is now 28th on the list, behind the United Kingdom, Korea, Canada, and France, among others. The primary purpose of fitness and body composition standards in the U.S. Armed Forces has always been to select individuals best suited to the physical demands of military service, based on the assumption that proper body weight and composition supports good health, physical fitness, and appropriate military appearance. The current epidemic of overweight and obesity in the United States affects the military services. The Federal guidelines on the identification, evaluation, and treatment of overweight and obesity in adults have defined "overweight" as a body mass index value between 25 and 29.9; and "obesity" as a body mass index value greater than or equal to 30.
