My life has taken a hairy twist. I’ve studied the Grimm Effect and am prepared to be the one who finally breaks it. The others who came before me failed, but I have an advantage they didn’t. I escaped my unhappily-ever-after. The one thing I don’t have? Jet-setting money. Good thing a prince I saved while working at the Fairytale Bureau has deep pockets. He’s offered to help me end the jinxing once and for all. What I didn’t count on was the curse fighting back. In an annoying twist, I am now the beast. From dusk ‘til dawn, I’m a hairy monster, and do you know what tames me when I’m tempted to eat annoying people? A certain sarcastic prince. However, I don’t have time for romance because I’m on a quest to save myself, and the world. A quest being thwarted at every turn by the evil magic that keeps spreading. Will I find the answer before everyone in the world is merely a character in a story? Admit defeat and take up residence in a dreary castle where I can roar at trespassers? Or should I take a page from a book and give true love a try?

Master storyteller K. M. Grant brings the dramatic saga of young love and religious conflict to a satisfying end in the final book of the Perfect Fire trilogy. As winter falls upon the Occitan, Raimon must find a way to recover the Blue Flame from the hands of the evil White Wolf. But his plan could lead him back to the pyre-and he might not be so lucky to escape from it again. Meanwhile, Yolanda-unwillingly married to Sir Hugh des Arcis-is threatened by her husband's desire for a son. As Sir Hugh sets off on a mission to claim the Occitain for France, she makes her own journey through the blizzard to find Raimon, a journey that could end in disaster. As the flames rise one last time, Raimon and Yolanda's fates, like the fates of the Flame and the Occitan itself, hang by a smoky thread.

When Scarlett O’Hara fluttered her dark lashes, did she threaten only the gentleman in her parlor or the very culture that produced her? Examining the “bad belle” as a recurring character, The Belle Gone Bad finds that white southern women writers from the antebellum period to the present have used treacherous belles to subtly indict their culture from within. Combining the southern ideal of ladyhood with the sexual power of the dark seductress, the bad belle is the perfect figure with which to critique a culture that effectively enslaved both its white and black women. Betina Entzminger traces the development of the bad belle from nineteenth-century domestic novelist E.D.E.N. Southworth to contemporary novelist Kaye Gibbons. Coy and alluring like the traditional southern belle, the bad belle is also manipulative and knowing; the men subject to her cultivated charms often meet disastrous ends. By making the patriarch vulnerable to women who outwardly conform to the limiting conventions of womanhood but inwardly break all the rules, these writers challenged a society that stereotyped black women as promiscuous and forced white women onto pedestals while committing heinous acts in their name. Representations of the bad belle evolved along with southern society, and by the late twentieth century, many women writers expressed emancipation through the literal or figurative destruction of corrupt or would-be belles. The Belle Gone Bad shows that even writers who have been critically dismissed as too domestic or conservative to be innovative did—through the strategy of the bad belle character—challenge southern institutions and conceptions about race, class, and gender. What unites the dangerous belles created by several generations of women writing in the South, old and new, is their liberating potential.

This Cinderella doesn’t need a prince charming, but she would like a happily-ever-after. Silly me, I thought I’d beaten the Grimm Effect when I ditched the old man who wouldn’t stop chasing me at the ball. However, here I am, decades later, with my fairy godmother popping back in for round two. No thanks. I intend to marry for love and not because of a curse. Avoiding the marriage trap might be easier if I wasn’t roped into acting as a liaison for a certain European prince. A good thing he’s at least charming compared to his assigned protective Grimm Knight. The upcoming ball for the prince’s birthday is turning into a chaotic mess, with hundreds of Cinderellas showing up determined to lose their shoe. While I’m busy trying to screen them before they come near His Royal Highness, I’m being plagued by oddities, some of which are threatening my life. As the curse does its best to force me into playing my role, I am equally determined to fight it. The question is, will my refusal to conform ruin my chance at happiness? A twisted, fairytale romance featuring a Cinderella who is determined to avoid marrying a prince.
