The crucial role that bees play in the Earth’s ecosystem is well known. Over the last decades a dramatic decrease in bee health has been seen on a global scale. This deterioration is seen on a global scale in both domestic and wild bees, precipitating a wider ecological impact. Veterinarians, animal scientists and bee husbandry specialists increasingly need to be provided with the skills to investigate and understand the situation; Managing Bee Health aims to provide an overview of the health of bees at individual and hive level, covering common and emerging diseases and preventive measures. Beginning with an overall analysis of bee anatomy and physiology, then deals with the main diseases and pathogens of bees and colonies and how to treat and control their clinical impact. Providing insights on bee nutrition, insect interaction with flowering plants, and presenting helpful points of contact to report suspected conditions, such as the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE). The book looks at the global pathogen status of bees, including not only the honeybee (Apis mellifera) but also other members of the Apis family. Managing Bee Health is a most useful guide for beekeepers, advisors, veterinarians and beekeeping enthusiasts, showing practical ways to understand bee health, treat sick or compromised hives and enhance the wellbeing and welfare of these wonderful creatures. 5m Books

A study on how Stingless Bee culturing and the impact of its products on human socio-economic, health and well-being development. From its ancient initation to the evolution of the current methods and techniques, it includes traditional practices across many ethnic beliefs and lifestyles. For example, Stingless bee honey is a popular traditional medicine that traditional practitioners use to treat various disorders, particularly respiratory and gastrointestinal disorders. A section on taste profiles explores new or improved tastes with herbal and spice infusions and mixes for more palatable healthy drinks and commercially viable culinary products. It also looks at Vinaigretes, salad dressing and marinades. This book makes comparisons of different vegetation exudates and nectar of different crop blossoms. It explains how the resulting products like honey, propolis and pollen derived from meliponiculture are used and how they impact human health.

Melittology - New Advances beckons curious minds to immerse themselves in the latest revelations within the realm of bee research. The journey starts with the exploration of the antimicrobial properties of natural honey, where the chemical composition, antibacterial activities, antifungal effects, and antiviral properties of honey are meticulously unraveled. It invites readers to transcend the scientific realm and delve into a narrative woven with historical, sacred, and holistic dimensions of honey that explores how honey evolves beyond its scientific attributes, transforming into a cultural and spiritual entity. Readers are then transported to the unique world of honey derived from Butia yatay palm savannas to learn about the distinctive characteristics of honey from this botanical and geographic origin. Moreover, the book sheds light on vital aspects of meliponiculture, emphasizing the imperative need for conservation efforts and explores the diversity, distribution, nesting, and foraging behavior of stingless bees, offering insights crucial for their preservation. It also provides an in-depth examination of symptoms, diagnosis, and management of various afflictions, underscoring the ongoing need for research, monitoring, and education for the preservation of honeybee populations. The book also delves into strategies to manage different microbial diseases, along with pests of honeybees, and illuminates the potential and prospects of biological control, offering sustainable solutions to combat challenges. It also uncovers the therapeutic potential of propolis in the dental realm, outlining its multifaceted applications in various dental contexts. Finally, the book explores diverse aspects, including the sociocultural importance of indigenous bees, historical uses of propolis, and the chemical composition of geopropolis, and provides deep insight into ancient wisdom as well as the modern medicinal applications of bee products. Melittology - New Advances invites readers to embark on an enlightening journey, fostering a profound appreciation for the integral role bees play in our world.

More than twenty years ago, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations contributed to the growing recognition of the role of pollination in agricultural production, with the publication of “The Pollination of Cultivated Plants in the Tropics”. Since that time, the appreciation of pollinators has grown, alongside the realization that we stand to lose them. But our knowledge and understanding of crop pollination, pollinator biology, and best management practices has also expanded over this time. This volume is the second of two “compendiums for practitioners”, sharing expert knowledge on all dimensions of crop pollination in both temperate and tropical zones. The focus in this second volume is on management, study and research tools and techniques.

This book covers pot-pollen—the other product, besides honey, stored in cerumen pots by Meliponini. Critical assessment is given of stingless bee and pot-pollen biodiversity in the Americas, Africa, Asia and Oceania. Topics addressed include historical biogeography, cultural knowledge, bee foraging behavior, pollination, ecological interactions, health applications, microbiology, the natural history of bee nests, and chemical, bioactive and individual plant components in stored pollen. Pot-pollen maintains the livelihoods of stingless bees and provides many interesting biological products that are just now beginning to be understood. The Meliponini have developed particular nesting biologies, uses of building materials, and an architecture for pollen storage. Environmental windows provide optimal temperature and availability of pollen sources for success in plant pollination and pollen storage. Palynological composition and pollen taxonomy are used to assess stingless honey bee pollination services. Pollen processing with microorganisms in the nest modifies chemical composition and bioactivity, and confers nutraceutical benefits to the honey and pollen widely relished by native people. Humans have always used stingless bees. Yet, sustainable meliponiculture (stingless bee-keeping) projects have so far lacked a treatise on pot-pollen, which experts provide in this transdisciplinary, groundbreaking volume.

The stingless bees are one of the most diverse, attractive, fascinating, conspicuous and useful of all the insect groups of the tropical world. This is a formidable and contentious claim but I believe it can be backed up. They are fifty times more species rich than the honey bees, the other tribe of highly eusocial bees. They are ubiquitous in the tropics and thrive in tropical cities. In rural areas, they nest in a diversity of sites and are found on the flowers of a broad diversity of crop plants. Their role in natural systems is barely studied but they almost certainly deserve that hallowed title of keystone species. They are popular with the general public and are greatly appreciated in zoos and gardens. The chapters of this book provide abundant further evidence of the ecological and economic importance of stingless bees.
