Lucidity in dreaming starts with lucidity in waking life. Lucidity is consciousness itself. It exists in a realm of experience beyond words; achieving it is not an intellectual exercise. To become lucid is a transformation of emotions, memories, and thought patterns to reach an altered state. It’s not your image of the walls that you want to dissolve when becoming lucid, it’s your image of reality. This is the first book to approach lucid dreaming through hypnosis. Each chapter has an introduction that you read, and a trance induction you can listen to online by accessing free MP3 audio files. These hypnotic inductions offer you experiential tours of altered states. Listen to them while falling asleep and they will become your lucid dream environment. Other books view lucid dreaming as awakening in a dream. This book views all states as dream states from which lucidity is possible. And what one becomes lucid of, when one becomes lucid, is another dream state as all states are our own constructions. Lucidity is an awakening to a level of consciousness that’s higher, broader, deeper, and more connected. Lucidity is not a goal, it’s a process; it’s not something you get, it’s something you become. Doing silly stuff in your dreams is as enlightening as doing silly stuff while awake. It’s fun for a while, but you grow out of it. On the other hand, breaking open your mind to move into what’s now not even comprehensible is something you don’t grow out of. This is not sleep work or dream work, it’s life work. Exploring the impossible is just the start. Let’s explore the inconceivable. Drawn from the author’s experience as a theoretical physicist, neurophysiologist, and hypnotherapist who focuses on sleep and trance states, Becoming Lucid would like to take your hand and lead you into states of mind you can’t even imagine. "Lincoln Stoller takes the de facto approach to lucid dreaming and turns it on its head. Rather than yet another guide book, this work represents a paradigm shift to an entirely new mode of thinking." — Chris Hammond, Chief Lucidity Officer at www.world-of-lucid-dreaming.com

A world-renowned expert in lucid dreaming and Tibetan dream yoga guides us into the tradition’s daytime practices, a complement to the nighttime practices taught in his previous book Dream Yoga. Most of us are absolutely certain that we’re awake here and now—it’s a given, right? Yet, according to Tibet’s dream yoga tradition, ordinary waking life is no more real than the illusions of our nightly dreams. In his previous book Dream Yoga, Andrew Holecek guided us into Tibetan Buddhism’s nocturnal path of lucid dreaming and other dimensions of sleeping consciousness. Now, with Dreams of Light, he offers us an in-depth, step-by-step guide to its daytime practices. Known as the “illusory form” practices, these teachings include insights, meditations, and actions to help us realize the dreamlike nature of our lives. Through an immersive exploration of the tradition, beginners and seasoned practitioners alike will learn everything they need to deeply transform both their sleeping and waking hours. “If you’ve struggled to awaken in your dreams,” teaches Holecek, “these techniques will often spark spontaneous lucidity during sleep. And if you’re already a successful lucid dreamer, they will open you to new depths of experience throughout your day.” For those wishing to explore Tibetan Buddhism’s profound path for awakening to the true nature of reality—day or night—Dreams of Light shows us the way.

A renowned philosopher of the mind, also known for his groundbreaking work on Buddhism and cognitive science, Evan Thompson combines the latest neuroscience research on sleep, dreaming, and meditation with Indian and Western philosophy of mind, casting new light on the self and its relation to the brain. Thompson shows how the self is a changing process, not a static thing. When we are awake we identify with our body, but if we let our mind wander or daydream, we project a mentally imagined self into the remembered past or anticipated future. As we fall asleep, the impression of being a bounded self distinct from the world dissolves, but the self reappears in the dream state. If we have a lucid dream, we no longer identify only with the self within the dream. Our sense of self now includes our dreaming self, the "I" as dreamer. Finally, as we meditate—either in the waking state or in a lucid dream—we can observe whatever images or thoughts arise and how we tend to identify with them as "me." We can also experience sheer awareness itself, distinct from the changing contents that make up our image of the self. Contemplative traditions say that we can learn to let go of the self, so that when we die we can witness its dissolution with equanimity. Thompson weaves together neuroscience, philosophy, and personal narrative to depict these transformations, adding uncommon depth to life's profound questions. Contemplative experience comes to illuminate scientific findings, and scientific evidence enriches the vast knowledge acquired by contemplatives.

A conscious mind in a sleeping brain: the title of this book provides a vivid image of the phenomenon of lucid dreaming, in which dreamers are consciously aware that they are dreaming while they seem to be soundly asleep. Lucid dreamers could be said to be awake to their inner worlds while they are asleep to the external world. Of the many questions that this singular phenomenon may raise, two are foremost: What is consciousness? And what is sleep? Although we cannot pro vide complete answers to either question here, we can at least explain the sense in which we are using the two terms. We say lucid dreamers are conscious because their subjective reports and behavior indicate that they are explicitly aware of the fact that they are asleep and dreaming; in other words, they are reflectively conscious of themselves. We say lucid dreamers are asleep primarily because they are not in sensory contact with the external world, and also because research shows physiological signs of what is conventionally considered REM sleep. The evidence presented in this book-preliminary as it is-still ought to make it clear that lucid dreaming is an experiential and physiological reality. Whether we should consider it a paradoxical form of sleep or a paradoxical form of waking or something else entirely, it seems too early to tell.

Lucid: Awake in the World and the Dream is a primer for the evolution of human consciousness. A biconscious writer, Gardner Eeden, lays the groundwork for how to live simultaneously in the world and the dream world, relating his unique experience as well as dissecting the current scientific and spiritual notions of what dreams are. This is a provocative, often irreverent work that blends fiction, science, real experience and metaphysical ideas that will guide readers to new possibilities in their own consciousness and will have readers wondering what they are truly capable of in the world and the dream.

Sleep is a set of states of mind. Insomnia describes the condition in which you cannot reach or cannot stabilize yourself in them. Insomnias in general, as well as other sleep dysfunctions, are the result of mental dysregulation; your inability to support your mind's natural states, transitions, and functions. This book works to retrain your mind. The Path To Sleep consists of written and spoken words. It contains a series of twenty-four guided visualizations—that you can download from the internet—that carry you in thought, image, rhythm, and frequency into a range of other states of mind. These are not simply different ideas or perspectives, they are different realities. You are a different person in these different states. Many people—especially those with sleep dysfunctions—do not, are rarely, or cannot even imagine being someone other than who they are. This makes the work in this book especially difficult or confusing for the very people who need this work the most. If you find yourself becoming lost or confused, that's exactly where you should be! Let the material unfold without your guidance and control. Learning to intentionally let go is a prerequisite for allowing your identity to dissolve, which is what sleep essentially is. Sleep is a form of metamorphosis you cannot control. You must let go of all that you are and create a completely empty space for other selves to arise. The Path To Sleep presumes no knowledge on the readers part, and does not require you to understand or remember any of the information it presents. Its works to improve your sleep through reforming your control of your thinking, leading you to less control and more flexibility. You cannot achieve this by trying, just as you cannot fall asleep by trying. Falling asleep, staying asleep, and experiencing the material in this book all require that you merge into a different state of mind. The book presents exercises to develop and strengthen this ability, and as your mental abilities improve, so will your patterns of sleep."This book—it is actually a training tool—views sleep as an activity controlled by your higher mind. Your higher mind is an elusive thing that resides in all things connected to you, sometimes conscious and cerebral, but more often chthonic, celestial, implicate, or ancestral. It is always present and listening, but hears many voices besides your own. Many you would not recognize as having any language at all, such as your body."This book speaks to your higher mind, and that’s why it should be read to you. Do not struggle to understand the material in this book and—to a large extent—I do not want you to understand it."This work trains your subconscious. You must be able to lose consciousness in it. Your consciousness exists to orient you, but it cannot perform healing. The limitations of your understanding are the sources of your problem; you cannot fix these limitations, you must move beyond them."Your consciousness has brought you to this book, but it cannot learn what is in it. This book is best understood when you are in a trance state and your conscious mind is relieved. In this state your sensible mind is free to leave, and you will not mind this book, which works to avoid making sense."Those who need this book the most may find it makes no sense. In that case, do not try to understand it, experience it. Experience yourself in terms of rhythm, frequency, and resonance. This is the consciousness you need for sleep." — from the Preface of Path to Sleep

This book is not offering enlightenment, it's describing it. The enlightened mind unites intellect and emotion despite their separation being built into the structure of our brains. This split appears in the mythic division between our lower and higher natures, and the separation of mind and body. Intellect and emotion function in concert. As color and shape are to vision, one complements the other. When fully integrated, they cannot be taken apart. The topics in the book's first half lean toward the intellectual. The second half looks at the division from the emotional side. What we are separating with one hand, we are putting together with the other. Struggle: We naturally consider our problems as different from ourselves. We see them in our environment, and rely on our skills and insights to resolve them. Our intellectual solutions address one aspect of these problems, while our emotions address another. Are these problems to be solved, or processes to be understood? What should we do if our problems are inside us? Mind: Your state determines your readiness, arousal, and self-reflection. Your state of mind orients your thinking, how you can feel about yourself, and who you re able to be. Equally important are thoughts you’re not likely to have,or cannot have at all. This book is about the states of mind that support focus, awareness, thoughts, and feelings. It s is not a guide to solving problems, it s an explanation of how you see. State: With our state of mind, we gather our thoughts and focus our attention. Focus without a state is like a telescope with no one to look through it. In order to focus, first take full responsibility for all you think and feel. The properties of your state determine what you re capable of. One state of mind is not enough because you cannot understand the world from one point of view. Your future is determined by your range of states of mind. Wisdom: Alternate states of mind support understandings we don t have. They may be logical, emotional, spiritual, or evanescent. They could involve knowledge spread across generations so that no one generation has the complete picture. We might call them prophetic, inspired, psychedelic, or delusional. Larger states of mind develop with experience, but they re not defined by the facts they hold. One needs a state of mind that can accommodate contradictions without generating conflict. Instantaneous Enlightenment: Change does not happen instantly, but epiphanies feel instantaneous. The reason is simple: a new state is a whole rearrangement of one’s previous conception. There are no halfway states to total rearrangement. Many pieces need to fall into place before we can make ourselves into something new. We are at a watershed moment in our understanding of the mind, after which psychology will change. Instead of focusing on thoughts and behavior, we are coming to understand that what s important is what you can think and how you can behave. The Operating Manual is an intellectual, emotional, and neurological road map to the integration you don’t yet have. REVIEWS and WORDS of PRAISE What a pleasure to see the wry wit and humor of an old friend focused on that which we all take for granted: our deep complex 'hard problem' of consciousness.
