It’s not easy to take responsibility in life. Whether it’s in our jobs, our finances, or even our relationships, we all struggle to take ownership of our habits and choices. Yet personal accountability is essential to both our personal and spiritual growth. Based on the book of 1 Kings, this study offers a compelling contrast between those who are accountable to God and others, and those who continually shift the blame to others. Part of Dr. Warren W. Wiersbe’s best-selling “BE” commentary series, BE Responsible has now been updated with study questions and a new introduction by Ken Baugh. A respected pastor and Bible teacher, Dr. Wiersbe shares how our integrity is connected with responsibility, and encourages us to stay accountable in each part of our lives.

When King David died, he left behind a peaceful kingdom that was following God. Most of the subsequent kings and prophets, however, failed to obey God, and so the nation suffered under exile and oppression. This book of 1 Kings reminds us that moral responsibility in leadership is needed today as much as it was needed in the age of Israel’s kings. This study will challenge you to take ownership of your habits and choices, with eternity in mind. The Wiersbe Bible Study Series delivers practical, in-depth guides to selected books of the Bible. Featuring insights from Dr. Warren W. Wiersbe’s Be Responsible commentary, this eight-week study includes engaging questions and practical applications that will help you connect God’s Word with your life.

The Second Book of Samuel presents the establishment of the kingdom of Israel* by David; the opening of First Kings shows us this kingdom definitely established by Solomon. It should be noted that the rule of Solomon forms one Continuous whole with that of David. The death of the aged king did not cause even a momentary interruption, Solomon having sat upon the throne of his father during David's lifetime. In type, this is a unique and continuous reign which, while presenting most contrasting characteristics according to one or the other of its periods, unites both of them in an indissoluble and absolute unity. Considered in its entirety, this reign begins with the rejection of the true king of Israel (1 Sam.), is consolidated, after victory, in the midst of dissensions of the people and strife (2 Sam.), and is finally established in peace, righteousness, and glory at the beginning of the book which now occupies us. This account, as indeed the whole of the Word, directs our eyes to Christ and presents His reign in all its various phases. Rejected as Messiah, He appears again upon the scene in the last days, gradually gathers Judah and the tribes of Israel under His sceptre, extends His dominion over the nations by judgments, but also in grace, until the final establishment of His universal, millennial kingdom. Then, in peace and in righteousness He rejoices in His victory, associating His earthly people with Himself in this.

This volume makes use of diverse methods and approaches to offer fresh treatments of 1 Kings 16 - 2 Kings 16 both synchronically and diachronically. Among its major contributions are a detailed text-critical analysis that frequently adopts readings of the Old Greek and Old Latin and, at the same time, a reexamination of the variant chronologies for the kings of Israel and Judah that argues for the priority of the one in the Masoretic Text. The book presents a new theory of the compositional history of these chapters that ascribes them mostly to the hand of a postexilic "Prophetic Narrator" who reworked older legenda, especially about Elisha, and effectively shaped Kings into the work we have today.
