The current state of knowledge with both studded tire performance and methods of assessing pavement wear is reported. An annotated bibliography is presented of all known research on this subject from the U.S. and European sources, a review and evaluation of the data and results of completed studies and recommendations for future research. The objectives of the study were confined to the following tests: (1) correlation of data on the frictional characteristics of studded tires on ice, packed snow, and on bare pavements, and (2) development of a method, or methods, of quantitative assessment of the difference in wearing and abrasive effects of studded versus unstudded tires on different types of surfaces. A stud-resistance coefficient for operation on ice was derived and all U.S. data are correlated with this parameter and ice temperature.

Byron Rutledge, a twenty-year-old university student from Queens, can't believe his good fortune when he stumbles upon summer work at a resort in the Catskill Mountains of upstate New York. Hired as a dishwasher, Byron is excited to spend his summer in the beautiful outdoors. But his expectations are quickly dashed when he encounters hellish working conditions, and is forced to live in a vermin-ridden bunkhouse with unbridled youths bent on doing drugs and alcohol. The picturesque mountains that surround the resort soon turn to concrete walls, and the tall pines seem to keep watch over him as sentry guards. Inevitably, Byron's unruly coworkers stir up trouble within the resort and with the townsfolk, with Byron finding himself caught in the middle. The story takes a Gothic turn as pressure mounts, triggering nightmares that nearly drive him to madness. Can he endure the summer's hardships by conquering his chimeras, or will he quit and return home? Rich in imagery and balanced with humorous dialogue, A Summer in the Catskills artfully depicts individual stories of desperation, tragedy, absurdity, and unhealed emotional wounds.

Set in a dystopian society in the not-too-distant future, this sci-fi novel follows the misadventures of a bar musician and army vet who's set up on terrorism charges and deported to a single-continent prison planet. After a fight in which he nearly kills a neo-Nazi, the antihero main character flees to the other end of the continent with a prisoner he knew from Earth—a Mexican anarchist and fellow musician—on a Gulliver's Travels–type journey through a number of political and religious cult compounds. With comical depictions of the various cults they encounter on the way, Free Radicals insightfully explores the often-failed attempts at utopia and the day-to-day life of two traveling musicians.
