BAMBI is a delicious book. For delicacy of perception and essential truth I hardly know any story of animals that can stand beside this life study of a forest deer. Felix Salten is a poet. He feels nature deeply, and he loves animals. I do not, as a rule, like the method which places human words in the mouths of dumb creatures, and it is the triumph of this book that, behind the conversation, one feels the real sensations of the creatures who speak. Clear and illuminating, and in places very moving, it is a little masterpiece. I read it in galley proof on the way from Paris to Calais, before a channel crossing. As I finished each sheet I handed it to my wife, who read, and handed it to my nephew’s wife, who read, and handed it to my nephew. For three hours the four of us read thus in silent absorption. Those who know what it is to read books in galley proof, and have experienced channel crossings, will realize that few books will stand such a test. BAMBI is one of them. I particularly recommend it to sportsmen. March 16th, 1928 John Galsworthy

When Johnny Kingdom met Bambi she was a frightened baby deer abandoned by her mother and trapped by the leg in a barbed wire fence. After he untangled her, Johnny became the calf's surrogate mother, carrying her from place to place and nursing her after the dangerous operation to amputate her now infected leg. As Bambi grew bigger she became a part of Johnny's family, taking over his garden and developing a taste for custard creams (and Johnny's wife's roses). But it wasn't just Johnny and his family who loved Bambi, the entire village came to lavish her with care and attention, dropping by with tasty treats they thought she might enjoy. But a three-legged deer was only the start of what Johnny had to contend with. Although Bambi was the centre of the Kingdom menagerie, she certainly wasn't the only member and she didn't always take kindly to the others. Getting to know Tommy the buzzard was a bit of a challenge. Having introduced us to Bambi in his autobiography Johnny now tells her full life story. At times both poignant and hilarious, this is the tale of how one very special animal united a family and brought together a whole community.

A new, beautifully illustrated translation of Felix Salten's celebrated novel Bambi-the original source of the beloved story. Most of us think we know the story of Bambi-but do we? The Original Bambi is an all-new, illustrated translation of a literary classic that presents the story as it was meant to be told. Jack Zipes's introduction traces the history of the book's reception and explores the tensions that Salten experienced in his own life-as a hunter who also loved animals, and as an Austrian Jew who sought acceptance in Viennese society even as he faced persecution. With captivating drawings by award-winning artist Alenka Sottler, The Original Bambi captures the rich emotional meaning of a celebrated story.
