Planets on account of certain positions in zodiac acquire strength & weakness. In order to assess the exact potency or strength of a planet, it is necessary to scrutinize its position in the Zodiac from various points of view. These various sources of strength are called Balas of planet. Parashar system recognizes six kinds of strength or potency or Bala of a planet. These are : 1. Sthan Bala or Positional Strength 2. Dik Bala or Directional Strength 3.Kala Bala or Temporal Strength 4. Chesta Bala or Motional Strength 5. Naisargika Bala or Permanent Strength 6. Drik Bala or Aspect Strength. The above six types of strength is known as Shadbala. Application of Shadbalas : The basic aim for any astrologer is to achieve accuracy in predictions. The calculation of Shadbalas help in meeting this objective in the following ways :- 1.Shad Balas of all planets give an account of assets & liabilities of each planet in a horoscope. Therefore one can have good idea about expectations from each planet. 2. By calculating Shadbalas & strength of all houses, it can be found out which is most powerful amongst Lagna, Moon & Sun. In astrology the predictions are considered more accurate from the chart which is strongest out of these three. 3. During main period & sub period, care has to be taken to find out which planet out of these two dosha lords is more powerful or has greater strength. For example if during Sun-Moon period, it is observed that Sun has move strength than Moon, then results likely to be achieved by native would be predominantly those indicated by Sun. Contrary to this if Moon is more powerful, Moon's influence will be felt in preference to that of Sun even though main period is of Sun. 4. If Shadbalas are ascertained correctly, future predictions can be ventured with sufficient confidence. This book shall be of immense help for learning the methods of calculation of Shadbala.

Globe and Mail bestseller, The Boat People is an extraordinary novel about a group of refugees who survive a perilous ocean voyage only to face the threat of deportation amid accusations of terrorism When a rusty cargo ship carrying Mahindan and five hundred fellow refugees from Sri Lanka's bloody civil war reaches Vancouver's shores, the young father thinks he and his six-year-old son can finally start a new life. Instead, the group is thrown into a detention processing center, with government officials and news headlines speculating that among the "boat people" are members of a separatist militant organization responsible for countless suicide attacks—and that these terrorists now pose a threat to Canada's national security. As the refugees become subject to heavy interrogation, Mahindan begins to fear that a desperate act taken in Sri Lanka to fund their escape may now jeopardize his and his son's chance for asylum. Told through the alternating perspectives of Mahindan; his lawyer, Priya, a second-generation Sri Lankan Canadian who reluctantly represents the refugees; and Grace, a third-generation Japanese Canadian adjudicator who must decide Mahindan's fate as evidence mounts against him, The Boat People is a spellbinding and timely novel that provokes a deeply compassionate lens through which to view the current refugee crisis.

In the first half of the 2d millennium BCE, translation occasionally depicted semantically incongruous correspondences. Such cases reflect ancient scribes substantiating their virtuosity with cuneiform writing by capitalizing on phonologic, graphemic, semantic, and other resemblances in the interlingual space. These scholar–scribes employed an essential scribal practice, analogical hermeneutics, an interpretative activity grounded in analogical reasoning and empowered by the potentiality of the cuneiform script. Scribal education systematized such practices, allowing scribes to utilize these habits in copying compositions and creating translations. In scribal education, analogical hermeneutics is exemplified in the word list "Izi", both in its structure and in its occasional bilingualism. By examining "Izi" as a product of the social field of scribal education, this book argues that scribes used analogical hermeneutics to cultivate their craft and establish themselves as knowledgeable scribes. Within a linguistic epistemology of cuneiform scribal culture, translation is a tool in the hands of a knowledgeable scholar.

This volume investigates the relationship between the central government and the provinces during the Ur III period (2112-2004 B.C.). Specifically, the book focuses on one system of taxation known as "bala," or "rotation," so called as provinces' payments rotated month by month throughout the year. This work is the first to take an interarchival approach, discussing Sumerian tablets from Umma, Lagash and Puzriš-Dagan, and is the first major synthesis of what has long been recognized as a fundamental institution. The book contains six chapters and detailed appendices (including charts, the edition of approximately 150 previously unpublished tablets and bibliographical material).
