Academic Paper from the year 2018 in the subject Psychology - Methods, grade: 4.00, University of Dhaka (Department of Finance), course: Research Methodology, language: English, abstract: The core of this study is to investigate the impact of class attendance on the academic achievement of the students. The academic achievement or academic performance is measured by the exam score of the students. Structured questionnaires have been prepared which provide a clear guide to extract the exact information from the desired source to conduct to study smoothly and effectively. The findings of this study explored that class attendance has a very strong relationship with academic performance of the student. The strong relationship between variables is claimed by the correlation between class attendance and academic performance of the students which is correlation 0.7686. Since, based on the findings of this study, it is concluded that class attendance has significant impact over academic performance so that it is recommended that compulsory class attendance and scholarship for full attendance are needed to be effectively implemented. This important study has been conducted in many other developed, developing and underdeveloped countries so that it becomes crucial to identify the effect of class attendance on the academic performance of students in Bangladesh.

This dissertation explores the attendance trends within NCLB's Supplemental Educational Services (SES). With reauthorization of NCLB on the horizon, knowing as much as possible about NCLB policies is vital to future decision making. Because current SES research tends to focus more on the effects SES has on academic achievement without attention to student attendance within SES, results of such studies could be questioned. Current SES enrollment practices register a student for SES and thus the student is a participant in SES. No distinction is made between students who enroll and never attend SES tutoring and those who enroll and fully complete programs. This study utilized a data set from Virginia Department of Education of students enrolled in SES during school years 2006-2009 and conducted quantitative analysis of student achievement in relation to the number of SES hours they attended. This study concludes with future research suggestions within SES to better inform policy makers.

"This study was completed to find if there is a correlation between high school attendance rates and graduation rates. Attendance in high school is imperative for student success, academic achievement and graduation. Research has shown that students that do not graduate from high school encounter numerous socioeconomic disadvantages over a lifetime, including decreased wages, poor health, and greater criminal activity (Fall & Roberts, 2012). For this study, archived data was collected from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education website. The raw data on attendance rates and graduation rates from the 2002 through 2013 were collected. This study shows that a positive correlation relationship exists between high school attendance and graduation in both large school and small schools."--portion of abstract

In Absent from School, Gottfried and Hutt offer a comprehensive and timely resource for educators and policy makers seeking to understand the scope, impact, and causes of chronic student absenteeism. The editors present a series of studies by leading researchers from a variety of disciplines that address which students are missing school and why, what roles schools themselves play in contributing to or offsetting patterns of absenteeism, and ways to assess student attendance for purposes of school accountability. The contributors examine school-based initiatives that focus on a range of issues, including transportation, student health, discipline policies, and protections for immigrant students, as well as interventions intended to improve student attendance. Only in the past two or three years has chronic absenteeism become the focus of attention among policy makers, civil rights advocates, and educators. Absent from School provides the first critical, systematic look at research that can inform and guide those who are working to ensure that every child is in school and learning every day.

This paper investigates the impact of a mandatory attendance policy on student grades. Data collected from 301 students in microeconomics principles classes taught by the same instructor are used to estimate performance. The empirical analysis controls for the endogeneity of attendance rates and class size. Results indicate that GPA prior to taking the course and SAT scores are consistent predictors of student performance, even after accounting for student withdrawals. In addition, attendance rates are not found to be significant indicators of exam grades after accounting for simultaneity. Since class size and the attendance policy do not appear to influence grades, it is suggested that instructors encourage, but not mandate attendance in both small and large lecture settings.

This study examined the influence of building configuration on the academic achievement and attendance of students who were considered chronically absent. A longitudinal nonequivalent groups research design was used to test the study’s six hypotheses. Data were collected from over 10,000 students within 38 K-8 schools and 40 6-8 middle schools in 24 urban school districts. These districts belonged to the Middle Cities Education Association (MCEA) in a Midwestern state. Student achievement data were collected from this state’s Department of Education’s Center for Educational Performance and Information (CEPI) database that focused specifically on 6th (2009) and 8th-grade (2011) achievement and attendance results. Data were analyzed using an independent samples t-test to measure the differences in mean scores of the two groups, and a one-way analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) to determine the intervening effects of the covariates on various demographic characteristics. Findings in this study indicate that there were no significant improvements in mathematics, reading, and chronically absent attendance rates for students who attended K-8 configured schools as compared to their corresponding peers attending 6-8 middle schools. This held true when adjusting for race, gender, Free and/or Reduced Lunch status, and students with disabilities. This study helps fill a void in the current body of literature by examining the influence of grade configuration (i.e., K-8 schools versus traditional 6-8 middle schools) on student achievement and attendance, and whether selected demographic variables (e.g., race, gender, Free and/or Reduced Lunch status, and students with disabilities) had an influence on these differences. The study concludes with several recommendations for further study.

There is a problem in large, suburban high schools that relates to reduced degrees of student success. This problem occurred due to poor student attendance which led to low academic achievement, high rates of student discipline, and decreased graduation rates. This problem also led to poor scores on state benchmark tests that can negatively impact district accreditation and cause a loss of state and federal funding. This study addressed the association between student attendance to three specific indicators of students' success. A quantitative correlational methodology was used to explain the degree of association between the students' attendance and the three outcome variables of academic achievement measured by grade point average (GPA), student discipline as measured by the number of office referrals, and graduation rates at a large, suburban hgih school in the Midwest. Archived data from a single school year are used in the research. As student attendance rates increased, the mean grade point average increased and mean discipline referral rates decreased. The results showed the impact in graduation rate was not significant. The results of this study have corroborated the previous research and literature on the topic of attendance on student success. The research found a significant correlation between attendance and student success. The data and conclusions can be used to advocate for programs and services and for the allocation of resources for educational programming; particularly programs that support increased student attendance, improved academic achievement, decreased discipline incidents, and enhanced rate of graduation.

Physical inactivity is a key determinant of health across the lifespan. A lack of activity increases the risk of heart disease, colon and breast cancer, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, osteoporosis, anxiety and depression and others diseases. Emerging literature has suggested that in terms of mortality, the global population health burden of physical inactivity approaches that of cigarette smoking. The prevalence and substantial disease risk associated with physical inactivity has been described as a pandemic. The prevalence, health impact, and evidence of changeability all have resulted in calls for action to increase physical activity across the lifespan. In response to the need to find ways to make physical activity a health priority for youth, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment was formed. Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed. This report will be of interest to local and national policymakers, school officials, teachers, and the education community, researchers, professional organizations, and parents interested in physical activity, physical education, and health for school-aged children and adolescents.

This book focuses on two crucial issues that need to be addressed as a matter of urgency by universities in the Arab region, namely (a) conducting independent assessments of the quality of their teaching, research, administration, governance, and planning; and (b) determining the relevance of their teaching, research, and societal impacts. Although well-established around the world in manufacturing industries and private-sector service industries, including the research and commercialisation arms of the major universities and research institutes, it is only in recent years that quality-assurance (QA) assessments have started to be applied to most aspects education. Several Arab universities are adopting various forms of QA but some variants are little more than bureaucratic “box-ticking” exercises with minimal commitment by staff to the ultimate aim of continuing self-improvement. This book will be of interest to senior management at faculty and departmental level and above in all Arab universities specifically, and more generally in Islamic institutions of higher education. Senior management in other universities, especially in the developing world will benefit from its analyses and recommendations.
