This book forms the Proceedings of an International RILEM Symposium, the fourth in the series, on Testing of Bituminous Mixes in Budapest, Hungary, October 1990. The aim of the Symposium is to promote tests for the characterization, design and quality control of bituminous mixes which combine the best features of traditional and modern approaches. Among the topics covered are specimen preparation, tests with unique loading (Marshall test, uniaxial tension and creep tests etc), which are used for mix design or control of mechanical properties, and tests with repeated loading, which give information on fatigue, permanent deformation and moduli, especially for mix design.

Summarizes research results concerned with the behavior of asphalt-aggregate mixes for pavements. An objective of this project was the development of a series of accelerated performance tests for asphalt-aggregate mixes together with methods for analyzing asphalt-aggregate interactions which significantly affect performance. Methodologies to define the fatigue, permanent deformation, thermal cracking, water sensitivity, and aging characteristics are described and use of these procedures in mix design/analysis stems which permit performance predictions under a variety of environmental and traffic loading conditions is illustrated.

This is a report on the state of the art of research on the phenomenon of the aging of asphalt-aggregate mixtures. Compared to research on the aging of asphalt cement, there has been little research on the aging of asphalt mixtures. Binder studies are considered as well as mixture sutdies, the relationship between laboratory aging tests and field performance, and the relationship between chemical composition and field performance. Recommendations are made for aging procedures which show promise for laboratory investigation. Test methods to evaluate aging are also considered. It is noted that extended heating procedures show the most promise for short-term aging and pressure oxidation and/or extended heating the most promise for long-term aging.
